From the responses where people actually mentioned which engine they have, or have it in their signature, it appears to be only on the 2.3. Maybe it just because it's a smaller engine and has to work harder.

A perfect example of this is the 2.0 4 cyl diesel engines in the newer Sprinters, the oil temp in those runs a lot higher than the older Sprinters with the 3.0 V-6 diesels. The smaller 2.0 is actually rated higher HP and torque as well which in my mind tells me the programming is pushing them pretty hard. It is not uncommon for those to hit 270F oil temps on grades and de-rate till things cool down.

Should not really be an issue though with good full synthetic oil and reasonable change intervals.

2026 Ranger XLT here, with the 2.3, new, with about 1200km or 745 miles. Mine also runs around 3/4 full on the oil temp gauge with general cruising on the highway. Drops a couple of points when doing around town stuff.

It does it because there are flaps in the grille that close at interstate speeds. This doesn’t allow enough air for the cooling system to cool the oil to normal levels.

Really bad programming on Ford’s part, just to chase an extra 0.1 MPG. The flaps should open if the temps start to rise.

The shutters must open when the AC is on because all my temps drop with the AC on, the coolant drops about 10 degrees F according to my SGIII.

I think someone mentioned on another thread that we don’t even have oil temp sensors in the 2.3?

It’s just the computer using the sensors and driving history, along with some fancy algorithms, to guesstimate the temperature?

Has anybody seen a disparity between what the vehicle is telling them versus their aftermarket sensors?

A transmission temp gauge in that spot would be much more useful. Instead, it's in the off road section for some reason, not even in the towing section.
I didn't realize those gauges were available (or forgot about them). Thanks for pointing them our in your post.

There would be no way for any kind of OBD gauge to see oil temp since the ECM doesn't have a way to monitor it. The only true way would be an old school physical gauge with a sensor screwed into an oil port on the engine, I don't think anyone here has done that.
