I thought I'd share in case anyone else finds it helpful. The Donandson Volant PowerCore 61517 will fit into the S&B RR intake (top lid and side cover both fit also).
I've been using the S&B intake with their paper filter and mesh pre-filter for a bit over 15K kms and have been happy with it. It was getting close to filter replacement time (I drive quite a bit of dusty dirt roads and leave the S&B side vent open) but they're not in stock so I went looking for other options and found Donaldson's Volant PowerCore air filters.
I don't want to use any filter with less filtering efficiency than the OEM paper filter (which was one reason I chose the S&B with their paper option, which has ISO 5011 testing) which led to finding the Volant (and learning about Donaldson's long reputation with filters in harsh environments). I did the measurements and found the Volant 61517 which has a 6" ID flange and was able to fit it in the S&B box. I picked this model for an angled flange to help position it a little better, but the straight 61508 would fit as well (just point more directly at the S&B's side opening). The S&B pre-filter fit over it as well (which has worked really well), but I'll order the Volant one and swap. It's about 2x the price, but should last more than 3x as long with better filtering and easier to buy in Australia.
They claim 99.99% efficiency on their PowerCore filters, but I haven't requested their ISO 5011 test yet, just trusting their reputation for now. Going from 99.63% (S&B dry) to 99.9%+ is a great improvement, especially for the dusty driving I do.
I don't know how it affects total airflow vs the S&B (they only have tests vs OEM filters) but performance improved a bit after swapping (not saying much since the S&B was dirty). Fuel consumption dropped around 0.75 L / 100km and 0-100 km/h was a bit faster (there's so many variables involved here though, just indicates it's not flowing less than the S&B was). I'm running full PW piping, Turbosmart intercooler, and a JB4 piggyback on custom profile (tweaked version of their e30 mode 4).
The Volant obviously doesn't have the airbox seal on the backside like the S&B filter, but that's an easy fix once I have time (hasn't had a dramatic affect on intake temps yet, but we're not in summer here yet).
If anyone else tries this, to get it into the box you have to compress the rubber flange against the top lid opening (back side toward engine) at about a 30-45 deg. angle and press the filter down from the front past the lip, then top-down to slide it in. It's a tight squeeze but it fits without damaging anything.
The S&B airbox obviously isn't ideal for this filter, but it works! Contemplating designing and 3D printing one for it, but I don't think it'd actually improve much, other than easier fitting and sealing.
