USB power question that turned into J-Brace conversation

Im thinking about just using a USB connection for my dash cam instead of hardwiring to the fuse box. As the title asks, are there any USB inside the truck that are powered 24/7 so the dashcam will run in parking mode?

I'm not sure how you're planning on running the cable, but the fuse box install was so ridiculously easy that I actually think it might be more difficult to run a wire to the USB. I got the 15 dollar hardwire dash kit off Amazon and did it myself in less than an hour.

That is the pro way for installation. I'm waiting on my proprietary power line that will go to the fuse box. In the past I was able to run my own wires through the channels for my Durangos but when I examined this it didn't seem that easy to channel the wiring so I have an installation place doing the job for me. About an hour of their time. Maybe you can explain how you ran the wire for the front camera and the secondary wire for the rear dash cam?

I'm such a terrible documentarian, I always intend to take photos but I end up never taking any breaks and just work until I'm done. Here’s a couple (in progress and completed)

It's the channeling of the wiring that Im curious about - you got a lot of tools out there and electrical panel out. Not that confident in my electrical skills so I'll pay someone to take ownership on the job. Just hoping that while my back is turned they don't break anything and quickly hot glue it back together.

To answer your question - I believe

that the truck has to be turned on and the drive button has to be pushed to get power of any kind with any outlet. That said, I could be wrong like so many other things. Plug an Apple charger into your USB outlet and see if it charges while truck is off. I have a 4 port USB hub attached to the single USB Plug and so far it works great.

I ended up going through the manual again and it seems that I could have just done that in the first place. None of the USBs stay powered on when the vehicle is turned off. The only thing that retains power is the 120 volt port in the truck bed.

For hardwired cam, use spare fuse slot #28 (micro2) for BATT and Fuse slot #21 & 22 (micro3) for ACC.

Pretty easy with fuse taps. I have my dash cam with park mode up and running.

Fuse box was easier than channeling the wire, tbh. I have zero electrical skills aside from "trial and error." And the fuse taps that come with the kit make it plug and play. (Unfortunately the fuse box can seem daunting, but it really isn't) I'll get a clear photo of the fuses I tapped later on.

Important to note that my camera’s “park mode” does not work, but I don’t want to shave any fuses down right now so maybe I’ll attempt that in the future with a Micro 3.

I’ll post pictures how they installed the wiring to the fusebox. I’m not going to enable the parking mode, but might want to bring it to their attention should I want to use it in the future.
