Being aware the car manufacturers are selling data to LexusNexus and Verisk who provide it to insurers which in turn gouge customers, I immediately looked for the settings in Sync to disable that sharing. One of the settings was Share Insurance Data. I turned that off along with any other data sharing options. Some time since then, Sync appears to have updated and the Share Insurance Data is no longer listed as an option. However, the options Share Vehicle Data and Share Vehicle Analytics were now enabled.

I've since turned off automatic updates. Ford re-enabling sharing (defaulting them on) with an update is extremely disappointing and seems like a privacy violation.

I turned all that shit off with my dealership rep at time of pickup. He took me through all the options and explained what they do and do I want to keep it on or turn it off. I put mine in mind your own business mode đź‘€

Well your data they and google/android/apple collect (and sell) is probably worth $10K to those that want the data. They will likely make it harder to opt-out. There are a lot of posts/threads you can search for on Ranger 5G and here that include many that use their phone and/or their home garage/driveway WI-FI for updates. My Cable co has a wi-fi mesh available in most of our metro area. I may just pay for the long-term AT&T LTE deal just to have as a backup navigation tool and try to opt-out of as much data collection as I can.

this is far worse than folks understand...

"Ford vehicles are able to access and store personal data such as call logs and text messages indefinitely via any phone that connects to the system – even if those records and messages are deleted on the phone in question or disconnected from the vehicle."

I found that, because Ford disabled the ability to opt-out of sharing diving data, even if you disable all connectivity, if you eventually do an OTA update, even using your own WI-FI, it will still upload all your diving data so Ford can sell it. The driving data is stored in a cache, just like a black box. One can postpone it, but not actually opt-out.

What is the version of sync do you have now? I have not seen any notifications for a sync update yet. I spent about 8 hours one time updating our F150 with FDRS. Sometimes they break stuff that wasn't broken with a update.

Just my opinion.
I want the tech , but this may change my mind about ford. Buying a pricey new vehicle. selling my privacy not part of the choice. Not buying a new truck to get a nanny. If there are better options. Maybe go for a xl, or different brand. I guess with phone connecting still has sync ,still screwed in some ways. I really want the drivers assist options, older driver.

And if we thought what they were doing now was bad....

https://www.motortrend.com/news/ford-in-vehicle-advertising-patent/

From article:
Yeah, you read the headline right. Ford has patented a system that, per the filing, would use several different sources of information to customize ad content to play in your car. One such information stream that this hypothetical system would use to determine what sort of ads to serve could be could be the voice commands you’ve given to the car. It could also identify your voice and recognize you and your ad preferences, and those of your passengers. Finally, it could listen to your conversations and determine if it’s better to serve you a visual ad while you’re talking, or an audio ad when there’s a lull in the conversation.

Every new car is sharing the same data no different than Ford is.

Pick your poison unless you choose something that is 5-10 years old and maintain it for life.
