Greetings

Got my Azure Gray Ranger Raptor back in September and I love this truck. Only about 500 offroad miles so far and it is almost as much fun as my 200hp Can Am without the dust, noise, and temp extremes. On pavement, it is a real hoot as well. Been on here reading and researching even prior to buying the RR. Great resource, thank you.

I am wondering if folks on here are asking themselves, as I am, how the Ford Performance ProCal tune which adds almost 100 ft-lbs of torque to 536 is compatible with the 10R60 ten speed transmission which has a maximum torque input of 443 lb-ft (600 NM)? F150s have the 10R80 10 spd which can handle 590 lb-ft. With the caveat from Ford that a dealer installed tune will maintain their OEM warranty, just wondering about these spec discrepancies? I have read that Explorer STs that share the RR motor and transmission have had 10 spd issues for some who have added power. A related warranty question is the bumper to bumper 3 yr/36,000 miles coverage vs the drivetrain which I thought was 5yr/60,000 miles - is the tune covered for both?

Thank you in advance and Happy Holidays,

Mark

So you’re asking if the tune that was made and is sold by Ford is compatible with the engine and transmission that is also made and sold by Ford?

Both being sold with a Ford warranty?

Great question!

It was an honest question by a new member. Your A-hole status has now gone up by one count. Congrats!
Ford Performance, not Ford the manufacturer will cover the cost of warranty repair to the power train if the failure was deemed to be tune related.
That warranty will expire at 36,000 miles or 36 months, whichever occurs first, from the time of purchase of the vehicle.
After that period, the onus is on you to prove that the tune didn't cause a power-train failure should one occur.
You and a few others are living in a delusional bubble.

Typically a part or assembly will have a margin of safety built into the design. It's typically 50%. The tune will also dial down the torque output in the first few gears to lesson the stress on the drive-line components.
Ford performance has taken into account that the failure rate will be low enough that most vehicles will survive long enough to make it to the end of the limited warranty. The vehicles that aren't flogged on a daily basis should last considerably longer.
The 10R60 should be able to handle the tune without any problems.

This is all great information.
I was planning on making the tune myself. Since my dealer won’t do it. Apparently there are no plans to bring it to Bahrain… so now I’m wondering if I could buy it in the US, shipped to Bahrain and do the tune myself.

also wondering what the implications would be in regards to warranty etc…

If anyone has any insights, or advice, let me know ! Cheers !

The margin is far far lower, maybe 10% at best. The torque rating is based on max load limits i.e., the RR has a 5300 curb weight + 5500 tow capacity. So ~442 lb-ft rating against 10800 lbs, is a different story for truck-only weight.

The Ecoboost V6 3.0TT and 10R60 has had sufficient years of tune experience with the ExST, especially by Livernois who made the FP ProCal tune, with a known safe limit of 530-540 lb-ft based on non-towing load.

That is to say and emphasize: never tow with a Performance tune installed. If you need to tow, UNINSTALL the tune and flash back to stock.

Now THAT is golden advice. Thank you @Dracena

So if I were to tow another car out of the sand, I would be at risk of frying my RR, do I understand that correctly. ?

You should be safe doing an immediate rescue/recovery. The other vehicle is going to be doing their part too. Just don't hook up and tow a trailer. This is the standing advice of the ExST community.

If any issues arise in-warranty, the dealer will see recent flash history but won't know what specific tune was used. If the original FP install was done by a dealer, it may be easier to argue you only went back to stock tune for towing purpose.

Either way, potential warranty issues is a neverending debate.

Ford Performance and ask the question, if you are 405HP not to tuned down EU version it should work. Mapping should be the same.
