hello everyone,

After some advice if it exists for this scenario.

i have a ford ranger with the following fog light switch pictured below. I have purchased an after market relay wiring kit for the fog lights, which iv installed and work, my issue is i’m wanting to wire them to the factory switch . Wondering if anyone can shed some light if possible ? the factory switch turns the icon on, on the cluster when i press it to show it’s working , but don’t have any factory wiring

i have 4 wires from the after market switch
and i also have an image of wiring on the back of the factory switch , i know the wire for the fog light works when i press the switch as i see current change with multi meter , just want to know if and how i can tap into this switch if its possible

any help would be appreciated

Did your truck come with OEM fog lights?

The simplest path is to rip out the aftermarket switch and wire right into the OEM connector at the OEM fog light location.

No OEM fog lights? That’s a taller order.

yeah the vehicle didn’t come with Oem fog lights, however i’m amazed that the dash light illuminates when i press the switch. I figured the relay would only need a signal to turn the lights on, however this is out of my calibre to understand

Looks like the OEM switch goes straight into the body control module. I believe that turns those signals into CanBUS instructions. So my gut says that there are no OEM outputs you could tap into.

unless someone wants to jump in here, I think this is over my head too.

this makes sense, im not 100% but I recall a while back when I upgraded a bumper seeing a plug at the front of the chassis hanging down , if this was per say for fog light factory loom that ford installed for upgrades, could this be an area worth trying to tap into ?

If you have the wires by the OEM fogs it would be simple. You could also use a multimeter to figure out if they were tied to the switch.

That would be the way I’d approach it.

yeah id have to pull the bumper off to confirm, but would be worth it if I can obtain using the factory switch opposed to this aftermarket thing. If I am to do this , what wires would go where from the relay switch , as I have green, ground and 2 positives

It looks like you can tap pin 14 GY-VT off the switch and run it to the relay’s low current (on/off) leg to control the relay. That should be 12V from the battery junction box.

when you say from the battery junction box, are you meaning the positive 12v wire which im running from the battery to the relay, and from the relay to the current switch . sorry for any confusion. if Im cutting off the switch end, where would the other wires run to ?

Thanks for the image Steve, if Im running this from the relay, do I discard the other wires coming from the aftermarket switch ? as mentioned from the relay to the switch there is 4 wires , 2 red ( which stem from 1 ) a black and a green wire.

Yes, you would discard them. Of the four wires:

red 1 - that's the wire that powers your relay for the fog lamps and the same as connecting to pin 14 in my diagram
black is ground - the kit switch uses it to illuminate the switch lamp - not needed
green - power from battery for the switch - not needed, the OEM switch already has power
red 2 - provides a backlight to the aftermarket switch when your interior lighted switches are on - not needed because you are using the OEM switch

Don't discard anything until after you have tested it. The relay already has a ground, so it should be good to go, unless the supplied 'control switch' cable also has a ground wire. In that case, you'll need to provide that ground too - it is part of the switching circuit. You can just jump the battery ground wire to that wire/post with same effect.

@Alaska Steve I tried connecting the red pos wire to the fog light no:14 wire on the back of the switch, however no luck - I did notice as soon as the wire was connected it wouldn't turn the switch off of the dash cluster, so im wondering what was going on there.
