I've owned a Lariat 2.3 now for over a year. If I had to do it over I'd buy the exact same setup. The Lariat's interior is tops. Whoever tells you the 2.3 doesn't have the cheese ignore. It has plenty of grunt.

Based on your usage it sounds like either will serve your purposes and the raptor is overkill for your needs. If you’re not off-roading a lot, or much at all, you’re paying daily with tire noise, fuel economy, even ride height for capability you’re not using or enjoying.

it might also be worth getting insurance quotes for both; when I did I was quoted more for the raptor and I personally don’t enjoy shoveling cash to insurance companies.

The lariat with the 2.7 is a great, smooth, and quiet daily driver that is plenty capable of doing work, hauling, and towing (for me, anyway).

I’ve had the Ranger Raptor for about two months and agree that it is a special vehicle. It is super comfortable as a daily driver and the power is always just waiting behind the scenes if you want or need it. I simply just enjoy the hell out of driving it.

I also agree that it is very well-optioned from the factory. I’ve added a tonneau and a console safe, and that’s it.

I don’t think you can make a bad choice here. Good luck in your decision.

There is no way I need the RR. The fact that I drive one and feel the greatness is wonderful. I may put it in gravel at some point. LOL.

Just think, you could have had a Raptor.

Second thought…RAPTOR, RAPTOR. RAPTOR! (As long as I’m spending some else’s money). Still love my XLT. But I know me, in another 6 months or so, I’d wish I got the Raptor.

you should be able to get 2500 off msrp on both vehicles minimum. If not fly out to my neck of the woods and just drive it home. If you need to haul stuff (sounds like you don't) then don't get raptor. If you just want to put some smiles on your face then go raptor. honestly the 2.7 with a ford tune is nuts your just roasting the tires at every stoplight giving your traction control a heart attack. I wouldn't run the 2.7 w/a tune without oversizing the tires. with that being said, if your looking to save money (you mentioned something about 87 octane) then I would pass on the raptor. A nice 2.3L will run on 87 and not break the bank and it zips around just fine. I mean a Volkswagen type R might be a fun zip around vehicle instead if you don't need to haul or tow or offroad. or just go full crazy get the raptor, get the factory ford tune and run 93 and you'll be looking for any reason to drive it haha.

The Raptor is very cool and I enjoy mine. But be honest with yourself in terms of needs. I was probably better suited with the capabilities of a Lariat... but I wanted the trailing arm + Watts link suspension from the Raptor. I'd give good money for a bed step.

Very few need the Raptor. But many want one. Get what you can afford.

That Watt's linkage is what sold me on the Raptor. It's a night and day difference in how a solid axle vehicle is planted in turns on non-ideal surfaces, and just turns in general; and especially useful on washboard.

It completely eliminates standard issue pickup truck skittishness.

The Watt's linkage was outstanding in 1794 when it was invented, and it's still state of the art rear suspension technology today, as well as used in countless industries.

It's the reason why the Raptor drives more like a sport-adjacent SUV than a pickup truck.

Make no mistake: That's the true selling point of the Raptor driving experience. It just isn't heralded as the benefit it is, because most people don't understand what it does.

“Needs vs wants”…frequent discussion in my house. You might not need a Raptor’s capabilities…I know I want them. The truth is that all Rangers with 4WD are exceptional off road. I “use” my 4WD every time the weatherman predicts (albeit incorrectly) that we might get snow/ice in Fort Worth, Texas. That requires a Raptor, right?

The 4A mode is really useful and something you can immediately feel when engaged during rain, wind, fierce dust storms that limit visibility to 100ft.

It really makes the vehicle feel planted and stable.

I have 4A on my F150 Lariat. Very stable and especially after I ditched the
OEM shocks for Bilstein 5100s all around.
