Curious what people have planned for fuel storage on long overland of raptor runs. I’ve got a 500 mile route planned through the Red Desert and Wyoming High country next year and some spots there will not be any options to get gas.

I have been looking at MOLLE bed racks like Built Rite that can hold rotopax but considering other alternatives. Seems like a ton of money to drop just for extra fuel storage. Another option is simply just strapping the fuel can to the existing hooks like this.

@AdventureLab has fuel jug mounts you can put in your bed
Thanks for the plug. I'm at SEMA right now, but plan on a detailed post about this before the weekend.

@telenerd we have been down the path of multiple Rotopax for this exact situation and I would advise against it. It's a lot of work getting those in and out often. I like to think of those more as emergency fuel more so than fuel you expect to use.

I will be developing a bracket to attach our new 10" Fuel Jug Mount directly to our MOLLE panels for the Ranger. The bracket will be sort of an "adapter" to exactly locate the jug for the Ranger. It will mount the jug touching the floor of the bed. No drilling required.

Here's a shot of the Ranger (@Baja_RR) bed setup we put together last week for this same situation (EXO trips in Baja). These are mounted right at the rear of the truck for easy access. I would prefer to have them against the cab, but the other cargo prevented that in this setup.

Long Range America has a 35 gallon replacement tank available now.
That would be a great solution, but quite a bit more spendy. Plus, this truck, the one in my last photos, is registered in California. Long Range America cannot sell to any vehicles registered in CA. He tried and they would not sell him one.

Great points to consider. And a replacement tank will definitely be a lot more expensive. Just throwing out an option I know exists for the rest of the country.

Plus OP appears to be in Wyoming and LRA is next door in Idaho.

LRA is a good idea but it appears it takes away from ground clearance and then would have to make my own skid plate for the gas tank.

Strongly considering Adventure labs Molle then using their mounts for fuel jugs. I would use a siphon to move the gas to the filler rather than trying to dink around with removing and lifting the jugs to pour them.

That would be a cool setup. I have seen some electric pumps that screw onto the top of the jugs that look interesting.

Here's an example - https://a.co/d/1Hn87GC

Keep in mind that there is a two-stage flap system in the Ranger fill tube. So, whatever spout it has on it will need to be about 5-6" long, and fairly small (smaller diameter than the spout on the Tuff Jug), to get past the second flap. The Safety Siphon would work well out of the box.

We will probably develop (or locate) a longer spot to use with the Tuff Jugs. Those are really nice jugs and empty very quickly, so we're probably going to start bundling them with our mounts.

What’s wrong with tried and true steel NATO cans? They are way better than anything made of plastic, I used to carry two big cans when I was driving a very thirsty Series 80 and later an LC 200, I got rid of those and now I sometimes carry a single 2.6 gallon one for emergency use, and I have never actually needed that.

Wavian 5.3 Gallon 20 Liter Authentic CARB Fuel Jerry Can w/Spout, Wavian USA Authentic NATO Jerry Can and Spout System - Rust-Proof, Red, 5 Gallon Gas Cans for Gasoline, Pack of 2

These never leak or stink, and can be carried in any position, even flat.
