Hey guys. Planning ahead for my 2026 Ford Ranger I have ordered from the dealer. I've settled on the RealTruck BAK Revolver X4S hard rolling tonneau cover for my needs but am curious what you guys would do for install.

I'm a DIYer so had originally planned on installing myself. But after looking online a bit, it worried me that I saw some people posting that they had a difficult time getting the rails lined up, found install to be difficult, ended up with rain getting through, and/or having to uninstall and reinstall multiple times. Granted, these were for other models of trucks but still, it had me worried.

On RealTruck the cover is listed for $1380. My local dealer quoted me for $1529 for the cover + install, putting an install at just 149 bucks. At the time, that seemed worth it to me not to mess with and have them do it.

But then I started digging in online and found that I can get this cover for significantly cheaper with discount and from other sellers, and can most likely get the cover for around $1175. If I go with the local dealer now the price difference is $354, which isn't as tempting for me to have someone else install for.

What do you guys think? Those of you with the BAK X4S hard rolling cover, did you install yourself or have someone do it for you? If you paid someone, who much did it cost? If you installed yourself, did you run into any trouble? Realtruck claims install only takes 30 minutes but looking at some videos and the instructions it seems a bit more complicated than that to get it all to work.

Thanks guys!

Id just do it yourself. $150 isn't much for the install, but it shouldn't take you more than an hour. The biggest benefit to doing it yourself is just understanding how it all goes together if you might have to adjust it or remove it in the future.

I did it myself and it was pretty easy.

Very solid point. How has it held up? Did you have to modify anything? Is it staying waterproof? Did the instructions make sense?

Thanks man! I'm thinking I'll give it a shot too

It has held up extremely well (looks as new) and the vehicle is stored outside year round, but its only been on there for a year.

With regards to waterproofing, the cover is totally waterproof, the seals on the sides, and the bed caps are not waterproof. You can seal the rails with weatherstripping during install and I'd recommend that. To weatherproof the bed caps is a bigger project. Some on this forum have done it, but I haven't. The tonneau is as waterproof as I need, but it is not 100% sealed.

I modified two things on my install:
1. I put spacers between the bulkhead of the truck, and the brackets that go against the bulkhead. My understanding is that I got an early unit that was probably 0.5" shorter than it should have been. I can't confirm 100%, but I think this has been corrected.
2. I used a dremel to round the sharp corners of the rails near the tailgate. They were very sharp when it arrived.

I'm overally happy with the tonneau. If I did it again, I may have gotten the version with T-slot rails, which would have given me more optionality for a bed rack. Mine doesn't have the T slot rails and I installed an Adarac bed rack which works perfectly, but I would have had more options with the T slots.

Thanks for the detailed response bud! I don't foresee needing a rack in the future but I guess those are famous last words haha... nonetheless I think I'll try to install myself. Thanks for the confidence boost!
