I have a 2025 2.7. And am wanting to tune it. Just don’t know which route to go. And propane cons with each. It’s my daily driver plus occasionally town with it. Iv looked into the fordprocal, Jb4, and 5 star tunes. Any others out there. And what’s the pros and cons to them.
Thanks
Alex.

I did the Ford Procal tune a few weeks ago.
Truck had maybe 700 miles at time of install with maybe 30 miles since. I do not drive much since i work from home lol.
Initial thoughts is it shifts alot better.
I really can not tell if it has anymore grunt though honestly. A bit disappointed but maybe it needs more miles on it to fully tell.
I do like the warranty though. That was a huge selling point. I feel like its a better driving experience just im not feeling any seat of the pants difference in my 2.7

I'm getting mine tuned right now with the Ford Performance Calibration so I'll be able to give you my initial thoughts on it in a bit.

Nice truck! I haven't purchased a tune for my 2.7l, I don't think I will while the truck is under warranty. But as someone who has had tunes on different trucks (previous 2.3l ranger, 6.7l cummins, 6.0l powerstroke) I will say a tune makes a HUGE difference in power for modern vehicles, especially turbocharged. Its probably best HP/$ money can buy. No, you won't be walking away from a ZR1, but you'll likely be very quick. Especially if you get an e85 blend tune. Downsides, without the FPT you'll lose warranty coverage if they find the tune is the cause of a problem. And running hot tunes and WOT all the time will degrade the engine.

ZFG Racing... I have it on my 2.7 and it woke the truck up and made shifting better. Adam is good at this.

Okay, so my initial impressions of the Ford Performance calibration for the 2.7L EcoBoost are that it provides a modest improvement in power, along with a moderate improvement in areas like throttle response and shift logic.

Having previously installed the Ford Performance calibration on my 2019 Ford Ranger XLT FX4, I would say that the gains from that tune felt more substantial. This is likely because the 2.3L tune results in an increase of approximately 60 lb-ft of torque, whereas the 2.7L sees a gain of around 30 lb-ft.

That being said, the 2.7L was already a more powerful engine than a Ford Performance tuned 2.3L. The calibration for the 2.7L widens that gap slightly, but not by a dramatic amount.

Overall, if you have a 2.7L Ranger that you daily drive and you’re looking for a bit more performance while maintaining Ford warranty support, it’s not a bad option. However, the cost may or may not be worth it depending on your expectations and goals.

If you’re looking to extract the maximum possible performance from a tune, there are definitely aftermarket options that will provide greater gains, though they may come with increased risk in terms of warranty coverage and long-term reliability.

For me, I would say it was worth it, but keep in mind that my Ranger is new and serves as my daily driver, so maintaining factory warranty support and reliability was important to me. I was also able to cover more than half of the cost of the tune and installation using Ford Rewards points, which definitely changed the overall cost-benefit calculation in my case.

The problem I have with ALL non-Ford ECU calibrations is that they all fail to do proper engineering test and validation that Ford Performance does due to a massive lack of resources compared to a multi-billion dollar OE and Ford Performance division has access to all the OE testing, which is done with their Cal's:

1. Wind tunnel testing with hot dry air to test for detonation at various loads
2. Drivability testing over altitude, humidity, load range.
3. Leave all the factory safeties in place to prevent damage to the valves (tuliping over time), catalyst and other critical components.
4. Testing to balance performance with component lifespan in the transmission such as band temps and clutch slip energies etc.
5. Test for production variability across multiple production vehicles to ensure full compatibility
6. 60k durability testing with teardown to compare wear rates vs. stock (FP generally finds no difference between component wear rates on their Calibrations vs. bone Stock).

So, if it's a daily driver and vehicle you both depend upon and owe money on, I would not personally go with any ECU calibration other than factory as it came or Ford Performance, which Fords own factory performance division, hence the warranty!

If I had a dollar for every time someone on the Mustang6g forum came on freaking out because their 2.3L went ecoboom from a non-Ford cal...I'd be rich!

That's just my 2 cents and I'm sticking with it. They may not be the hottest cal out there, but they ARE the most RELIABLE Ford ecu cal out there, bar none. The Ford Performance cal's are basically what the engine was designed to handle when you get rid of the requirement to scale between low grade fuels and higher grades, so it's literally a factory HiPo cal.

The tune definitely helps the shifts feel better. While i am not really noticing any power gains im not hammering it either. It definitely feels like it runs better . Not sure if it will be more or less reliable with the ford performance tune or not but based on how it shifts and drives i can not imagine any worse.
