So to start with I took my truck in for the airbag recall at around 9000 miles, and recently (now at 10,500 mi) I realized that my 10,000 mile service due notice went away in the app. I called the dealer and asked if they had performed the 10k inspection during the recall service and the gal dug through the service records and determined no, they had not. So I made an appointment.

So today I arrive and say I'm here for the 10k checkup, and immediately the guy says since its a 2 year old truck they recommend cleaning the injectors, changing the cabin air filter, and a bunch of other things I can't remember, so it'll be $1500, is that okay? I recognized that none of the things he listed were on the 10k inspection list (below) so I questioned him, and said I'm only here for the 10k service items... He then proceeded to tell me that those were items they normally do for a 10k... I said that I looked at the list yesterday and that none of the things you listed are on there (the air filter is a 20k mile item, everything else isn't even on it...) He then told me they have a 2 year lifetime... I say fine, just give me a list of what you think needs to be done and I'll take it to my mechanic/myself, just do the 10k inspection. So he then spends another 2 mins on the computer and comes back saying he double checked and found that they had done the 10k inspection when I brought it in for the recall, so I'm good... So I mentioned that I called and clarified and all that, and he says "the scheduler doesn't know what she's doing, we did a multi-point inspection, that's your 10k service". So I then point out "if that's the case then why didn't you rotate my tires?" and he's all "well we didn't have it in for the 10k, so we didn't do everything, but the multi-point inspection covers everything needed for the 10k".

At this point I pull out the list and ask if all the things above multi-point inspection were done, and he says yes... We hash it out for a while longer and he goes "ok, so you're just here for a tire rotation and an oil change?" and I say no oil change, just a tire rotation and whatever 10k inspection you didn't do last time... He asks why no oil change and I share that it's not due for one, as its only been 3k miles/6 months since it was last done by CarMax when I bought it... His tune then instantly changes, and he says none of the service is required, because CarMax's service would have done it, (he also mentioned CarMax usually brings their relatively new Fords to them since they're across the street) and the only thing I need is a tire rotation, and they'll do another multi-point inspection... I ask if CarMax had serviced it here wouldn't that be in the records? and he says "no, not necessarily, we do a lot of work off the books for them"... I say whatever and leave the truck for the multi-point and tire rotation...

This all leads to my question. Has anyone else taken their truck in for a 10k (at a non-shyster dealer) and can speak to whether the "multi-point inspection" covered everything below? Or did you have different line items? I know the dealership is being sleazy, but I'm curious HOW sleazy...

You have to specify that you want the “Ford” 10k service, not the dealer service. All of the dealers around here have their particular mileage ”services” that are little more than money generators for them. Mine keeps pushing for a 4-wheel alignment at just over 10K miles on my Bronco. I always refuse because I watch my tire wear closely. plus, I can get a better (closer to exact specs) alignment at an independent shop.

Good to know on the Ford vs Dealership services... will definitely remember that in the future...

Also just got a text with an inspection video showing my rear shocks as being bad and leaking oil everywhere... Mechanic doing the inspection said it "looks like they've been leaking for a while". Thankfully it's covered under warranty, but shows they likely didn't check very hard when I had it in last month...

And of course they can't get the shocks until next week... Then they said it was ready to pick up and left me waiting for 20 mins because it was being washed... Happy they did, but why tell me it's ready when it's not?

Guess I should consider myself lucky that the recall repair went smoothly with them... This is the Ford dealership in Duarte, CA in case anyone is curious.

So keep in mind that all vehicle dealerships are franchises and have the freedom to do as they please with service, provided they at least do the minimum Ford recommended services.
That said, it seems to me this dealership has a standard practice of replacing certain consumable parts at 2 years. My local dealership (Planet Ford Spring, TX) has the associated Quick Lane and I have gone there for years. They stick to the Ford recommendations and have always been very above board and fair. Not sure where you live, but I've found that small town dealerships are more likely to screw you over because they need the revenue. I'd recommend finding a dealer/Quick Lane in a larger city/metro area for service. Actual repair work at the dealer will be harder to schedule because they are so busy, but I've found the maintenance side to be better and the service to be trustworthy.

I would have guessed you were at Ford Country in Henderson, NV. This sounds right up their alley.

I am not trying to detract from your experience or say that you are wrong - I just wanted to share that the small town dealership I bought my truck from and continue to go back to for major service items is the most honest dealer I have encountered. The service techs are very straightforward with me the sales staff was very honest when I was ordering my truck.
Bottom line: it’s not really about whether they are small town or not - just go to a dealership you trust. They need to earn that trust, which is why I’m very skeptical visiting other dealers that are closer to me for items like the airbag recall.

There is a difference between 10K "Checkup/Inspection" and 10K "Service".

I solely used the term "checkup" when I was there and dealing with them... not service, which is why I was surprised when they came back with a list of $1500 worth of service items instantly... and their "your truck is 2 years old" is BS too because the truck isn't even 2 yet... it was delivered (to its original owner) in June of '24, so it's only ~18 months old. They just thought they could make a quick buck...

And going to a bigger dealer isn't really an option... the next closest dealer is the one in downtown Los Angeles... it doesn't get much bigger. If anything this dealer just doesn't give a crap because their franchisee owns 14 dealerships across 5 different brands, all of which have horrid service reviews. This dealer is also the only "Quick Lane" in the county.

Just learn to change your own oil and rotate your own tires, I've been doing it this way since 1980 with no problems. Don't mean to give any "Boomer" attitudes just trying to simplify your life.

Oh on edit, keep receipts , there is federal laws against then VOIDING your warranty for performing your own service.

I already do. But regular inspections on a new vehicle is something completely different .

Okay Great, I'm pleased that you do... So you're just trying to keep them within their contract. Glad to that you are.
And they sound like a shady dealer, jmo.

Guess I'm lucky, as I've done business for the dealership I use since 1988. Plus, I worked for them 6-1/2 years as a service writer, and the last 3 years, I've went and got cars at the auction for them, and do dealer trades.

I've not had a problem with being taken advantage of on parts, or service. It's a family owned business. So far, so good.

I like to use the word "Inspection", so the service advisor and mechanic can't confuse it with "service."

I totally agree with you. I live in a county with 300,000 people but have been dealing with a small town dealership near here. They treat me like family and I've never once had them try to push a non-necessary repair/replacement on me.

It's possible that is true because everybody knows everybody (well almost) in that small town and if the dealership is dishonest everybody will know in short order.
