Anunusual question. 2025 ranger XL.
My truck will be sitting out in the open most of the time. I will be building a overhead shelter later.
I live in the woods, I have for many years. I have had issues with rodents chewing underhood wiring on 1 vehicle
My 93 f150 Ive hsad for over 20 yrs. They have never bothered other vehicles. It would be a nightmare if they got into my ranger wiring. Raising the hood, maze of wiring and plumbing . Any suggestions? I know toyota has had similar issues, they use vegetables of some sort included in the wiring insulatilon. Not very smart, its green. But chow time for rodents? Rodents havent bothered my 12 yr old camry or other vehicles. I have owned.

We built a 25'x25' metal tractor shed out on our ranch, Brokenoak. Rats got under the instrument panel of my Kubota tractor while parked under that and the result was a $3400 bill for replacing the wiring harness and fuel sensing unit. Now, I have two electronic rodent repellers wired to the battery and I keep it parked out in the open. In two years, I haven't had a problem yet. I keep some bagged rat poison pellets under the tractor hood too, just in case. The problem with the electronic devices is they will run the battery down, so I try to start and drive it every five or six days. I've since placed one of the repellers under the cowling on my Yamaha Wolverine 4-wheeler to prevent rodent damage there and since it's stored in a 12'x8' storage room, it seems to keep rodents out of that room as well.

I'm surprised the electronic devices work. I always thought they were snake oil.. What do I know what a rodent can hear and what frequencies actually deter? Plus, there sense of smell is much better than hearing...

After my F150 main wiring was damaged by rodent during covid shutdowns, I hung moth balls in engine bay. Used lint traps, and placed 2 moth ball per trap on each side of engine bay. Never had issues again. Ranger is kept in garage, so no issues to combat.

I had evidence of rodents because the underhood insulation on my Ranger got picked at.

I ordered some sachet bags from Amazon and put strips of Irish Spring soap (about 1/3 of a bar) in them. There are 4 of them hung in different areas of the engine bay, particularly near wiring bundles.

No additional evidence of rodents has been found since I did that. I added them to all of our other vehicles, including my tractor. The tractor also has an additional repellent - there's a large black snake that lives nearby and cruises around the tractor shed looking for tasty morsels.

I got this advise from an old country vet. They rely on their sense of smell more than anything else to avoid danger. They do not like any strong scents as that sense of smell is powerful. Use any type of strong set in an oil base so it will last longer, peppermint oil, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus oil, my cheap favorite is the strong scented , muscle rub stuff that comes in a tube. Just pub little dabs in several places under the hood, dash, you might not smell it but they can.:like: Forgot to add, the reason they are constantly chewing crap up is not that their ingesting it, the little pesky shits teeth never stop growing so they have to constantly wear them down!

The devices do emit a high frequency sound but they also feature a really bright flashing white light that turns on intermittently and pretty frequently, as well as a red flashing light and a green "pilot" light too. I imagine the flashing light does most of the repelling. It's quite bright in the closed storeroom with the ATV and is really noticeable outside on the tractor, day and night. I'm mostly surprised that after two years, they're still working. 😉

I have a barn/shed that is not completely pest proof - yet.

I keep a camper out there and have found leaving the hood up seems to help keep them out of the engine bay. Rodents like dark private places. When I stored the motorhome with a maintainer connected to the battery and the hood closed there was a lot of mouse droppings in the area. The next winter when I left the hood UP with the maintainer still connected, the area was clean.

Hood up, leave some lights on, etc. A friend of mine leaves lights on and music playing in his storage unit 24/7.

check out "cab fresh". Maybe find a dry spot under the hood. I through 1 of 2 under vehicles in shop.
