Coming from the diesel pickup world where most air filters setups include a "Filter Minder" to track filter restrictions. I also am a fan of oil testing and have tested my RR several times now as it breaks in to see where the Silicon level settles on. Before I start changing the factory air filter or even the factory air filter box setup, I want to have some baseline on silicon. I want the most power and efficiency but do not want to be compromising engine longevity by allowing anything past the air filter that the factory filter keeps out.

To take a stab at a "Filter Minder" I purchased the K&N version that is calibrated at 10 " of water or very sensitive. Ran the pickup on the full boost through a few gears and checked to gauge. It was maxed out.

I then acquired a WIX version that is calibrated at 27 inches of water (....or about 1 PSI). I did a full boost run and got this result. This is on the factory air filter that looks like new but does have 18K miles on it.

While it looks like a lot of restriction, it is less then 0.5 PSI.

It's not surprising that the K&N version is calibrated for their filters, which have less restriction. But IMO, less restriction means less filtration, assuming they are of the same surface area.

I recently removed the resonator type baffle in the stock airbox, not sure how much it helps but can't be a bad thing to clean it up inside and have nice clean flow, maybe one for you to test out with this device 👍

My interest in finding the restriction with the stock setup is to have something to compare to when/if I upgrade to a CAI.

Thinking of going with the AFE as I am interested in keeping the dirt that gets past the filter the same as the stock setup. I do oil analysis so I will see any increase in Silicone with a CAI if it happens.

I am NOT interested in a CAI that allows the most air....just more than stock with the same filtering.

AFE has a higher flow oiled filter, paper filter (which) I would go with, and then ProGuard 7 that is even more restrictive but as close to 100% efficient as one can get. I would hope a CAI would offer less restriction, even with a paper version of their filter given the larger filtering area.....but we will see.

Just wanted to update. I did add a CAI. I went with the AFE given they have as an option to their CAI the Pro Guard7 filter which is 99.7% (....is that 100%?) but it gives up air flow. So, I went with the Pro Dry S which to me seems like a happy medium between flow ability and filtering. I do oil analysis so if silicone goes up...might have to switch to their Pro Guard7.

What I was surprised with is the restriction value based on a full power run and the vacuum it created between the new filter and the engine was almost identical to the factory filer and air system. You can see where I added the "Filter Minder".

Here is the Filter Minder after a full power run. I do see upper 20s lbs of boost for a very short time initially, then around 24 - 25 lbs tops in the gears above.

Just curious for those engine builder's testers.....I was expecting a little less vacuum with the AFE filter vs factory. Priority one for me is keeping dirt out as good as the factory filter. The truck has plenty of power.

The AFE kit went in fine, well made. Filter looks awesome and well made. Only way for air to get in is the factory front scoop.

I drove through rain on the interstate. Stopped and check after a few 100 miles and saw it a little wet on the plastic into the filter area but the filter seemed dry.

If I understand your analysis correctly - I wonder what the difference would be between the full AFE CAI setup and the stock setup w AFE filter. Basically isolating the intake from the filter.

I was suprised the factory filter (....still had in at 20K miles) vs this AFE CAI with there Pro Dry filter had the same vacuum restriction between the fitler and the engine. I would have expected this AFE fitler to flow a little more air thus lower vacuum restriction. Its not worse then a factory filter but....as installed does not flow more. If the gauge I am using is a valid way to access air flow after the fitler??
