Yeah these hard bottomed hammocks are my favorite solution. The one I have has a fairly slippery surface, so I also have a thin soft dog bed that fits it.

This one is soft bottomed hence the mention it might not be any better. Apologies for any confusion.

Haven't gotten to do a road trip in the Ranger yet, but in my F150, I put a couple milk crates on the floor to build out the seat.

Then a put two dog beds in there and held them to the seat profile with the seatbelts. This, covered with a sheet was great for road trips.

It would hold up for the entire trip too if your Great Dane didn't do Great Dane things.

Obviously the milk crates will not work in the Ranger. I do believe I can make a simple plywood form or box and achieve the same thing though.

There are a million "hammocks" on Amazon, probably all made in the same factory! I bought one that has the hard bottom, so it extends over the foot wells, and it has a couple of velcro pockets. Our dog does quite well with it- gives him a wide platform to stand and stick his face out the window and comfortable area to lay down and sleep.
