That sounds like a good setup. I’m not sure ARE, Snugtop, Leer…. are molding their toppers to fit without the plastic cap - I’d worry about the topper, which over hangs the plastic caps, would contact the painted exterior of the bed.

For the Ranger, we are removing the plastic bed rails to eliminate the isolated load onto those pucks/spacers.
We have brackets that bolt directly into the bed and attach to a block that sits on the L-track along the bed rails. This achieves clamp load and locks the topper in place, preventing it from shifting in x, y, or Z directions, so there is no chance of it shifting under heavy off-road abuse.

On a former pickup with a LEER topper, it kept moving around to the point the paint was chipping at the tail end/corner. I had the clamps so tight they were bending.

If I were to get a fiberglass topper for my Ranger, I would at least put one bolt through the topper and one hole at the mid bed rail mount location. The bolts should only need to be snugged. Maybe a bolt at each forward and aft bed rail mounts would work better--just to keep the topper in place. Of course the clamps are also used.
