Does a flat panel tailgate cap exist? Has anyone come up with a solution to seal tonneaus and caps to the stepped tailgate cap with spring loaded clamp inserts? The oem design looks cool on paper but has proven to be less than useful in the real world.

I agree - like the bed design, the tailgate cap design is idiotic and poorly thought out. The deep grooves on top cause my Go Fast Campers Topper lower hatch seal to hang up. It would not be hard for a plastic accessories manufacturer to make a black fitted cap that is dead flat and attaches on TOP of the Ford one with 3M VHB tape. It could even be offered in carbon fiber or colors for those who want bling,

Muslogy, are you listening? Message sent!

Thanks man. I think the tailgate spoiler offering would solve the problem, but I’m not in the habit of taping non-functional stuff to my vehicles. I am curious if the 19-23 ranger tailgate cap would fit. It’s very similar to the f-150 design and looks to have the same mounting points. I am unsure if the exterior shape is close enough to make it work.

Maybe get a replacement stock cap and see if you can sand the ridges down smooth with a sander?

it’s not the ridges, it’s the lack of a flat surface that is presenting issues for me. The oem design drops down about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from rear to front.

I wonder if different trim have different caps. Mine has ridges that catch the gasket, if i remeber right. I never noticed it was angled but maybe it is. I will have to look

i went and checked my truck and forgot to come back with what i found. the cap does have ridges but they are not sticking up and are more like channels that are round and get lower as they move outwards but the last one, nearest the outside is high again so for sure, no way to fill it easily.

what i did though, was put my foam seal on the nearest the truck bed, which is the highest point. it seals mine but not sure how that would help on a camper shell since i just have a soft tonneau

Unfortunately, I don't think it will work. I've been researching and comparing what I can find online. It looks like the clips have different mounting points and the shape looks a different between the gens. See below:

I think an aftermarket cap may be the best bet at the moment.

Thanks for saving me from $130 research!

Who can make aftermarket caps? I would buy one.
