Just took delivery of my '25 Ranger 2.7l with 35 miles on it two days ago. Studied up and have adhered to break-in procedures. Filled up (said 304 miles to empty -disappointed) and drove approx 130 miles today both on highway (at 55 to 69 mph with crazies flying by at 80 -that killed me) and slower side streets. At the end of the trip looked at gas guage and it said I had 299 miles to empty.

Anyone have this happen? I tried turning engine off then on hoping for a reset but nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

It’s probably just calibrating itself. It doesn’t know how many miles until empty as it hasn’t seen how far a tank goes. Should become more accurate over time

Pretty sure mine did this when new too. Said it had 500km to empty and then kept increasing randomly as I drove it. After a few tanks it’s been spot on ever since

That's normal. After you go through a few tanks of gas it will be more accurate. It learns as you drive.

You turned some nice MPG's and your truck computer is telling you that, as a result of how you were driving, it's approximating 299 miles of range. Is this your first vehicle with a DTE display? If so, the DTE that is displayed at a tank up is based on your MPG's from your previous tank. If, say, you were trashing it on the previous tank and getting 10 MPG at fill up the computer will tell you that you have about 190 miles of range. If, however, you drive lite on the new tank, you can go 100 miles and actually show more range than when you started. Your display is working fine. Enjoy the new truck!

Thanks much. Forgot to mention the DTE says 299 miles but the needle shows about 5/8 full. I feel the needle position could be pretty accurate. Thoughts on whether the numeric DTE value and the needle value are "separate"?

Thank you Don. I've had several cars that displayed DTE but never this issue. Sure hope it corrects itself. I'll report back after it does!

Thanks for explaining DTE is calculated using the prior tank MPG. Makes sense.

The other thing that is going on, my dealer told me to not be surprised with poor mileage with the first few tanks of gas. My first tank 13mpg, my second tank 17mpg, third tank 23mpg. The DTE has also been increasing. Mine is a ā€˜25 Lariat FX4 with the 2.7 engine.

Crazy to me this is a thing. It's counterintuitive. Brand new truck, sophisticated electronics, etc. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.
