Ghost mode? Drive mode randomly switching while driving

Interesting. I took mine in and they had it for 2 weeks and finally they got it to replicate the issue. They ordered a new switch and told me the engineers are working on a software update for it as well. In the meantime, my truck hasn't done it since I got it back which has been about a month now. I'll repost when I take it in. I think the switch came in.

Glad they were able to replicate the issue. 2 weeks though? Yikes!

This happens to me constantly(at least a couple of times a week). I've reported it, but of course they want me to bring the truck in; however, how am I supposed to go without a vehicle while they try to diagnose and replicate it.

Sometimes when I hear it try to happen I'll get the "Drive mode not available" error pop up and then the switch doesn't work at all even if I try to switch it until the next restart.

is @Ford on this forum? I have had my Raptor to the dealer three times and they cant replicate it. Admittedly it's intermittent, but I find it strange that we cant change a $156.00 part after all else failed. Plus it's on national backorder, almost feels like there's an issue here? Love my truck but this is getting stupid.

Ford quit monitoring the site quite some time ago. They announced as such. Reaching out to them here is unfortunately falling on deaf ears.

Mine still does it. Happened this morning when I started the truck to go to work. Placed my sunglasses in the cup holder and it just started switching modes. For me it's been annoying more than a safety concern. It won't actually switch to 4L or what have you unless you come to a complete stop (says so anyways). I'm also plagued with random "unable to use MyMode" messages, and at that point it won't switch modes at all. Simple restart fixes it but still annoying.

Mine just oddly did this today and tried to go into rock crawl. Did it twice before a few months ago.

Like nate, my ranger has done the "drive mode not available" too.
And yes, when taking drink in and out of my rear cup holder it wants to change drive mode. Unfortunately, more often than not. It is very annoying. I figure it is a software glitch, but who knows?

I have had this issue a few random times but not with enough consistency to really make a case. But luckily the truck systems won't allow going to 4L at road speeds.

Ghost switching modes since new.

Modes: While in 2H my mode choices are Normal, Eco, Sport, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, Sand, in this order.

If I fail to push OK, right after startup, to “Return to Sport?”, the mode reverts to Normal.

Since I prefer Sport mode I turn/release Drive Mode knob to first see Normal, then Eco and then Sport, either sitting in Park or underway. Knowing that, if I turn/release the mode knob three times and it lands on Sport. I do the selection process without looking and often find it in Sand mode, as I am under way. I then have to slowly turn knob counterclockwise to get back to Sport. I have to turn/release it, wait 1/2 second to go to previous mode, and repeat slowly to get all the way back to Sport mode. Backing through the modes like this I see where it is selecting 4 wheel drive mode at Slippery mode, giving dash warning that it is selecting 4 wheel drive mode, and the 4H lights up on the center part of the selector system. But, I turn it counterclockwise again right away and it goes to the next previous mode along with 2H illuminating. I continue all the way back to Sport mode, where I want to be. If I am moving it doesn’t go into Mud/Ruts or Sand even though it is selected.

When starting and failing to push the steering wheel button to “Return to Sport” mode, I have found that turning the mode knob clockwise, letting the knob snap back, and turning again, and repeating, with a much slower cadence, I normally wind up in Sport mode. After using this procedure for a week, I got fooled one day as the drive mode went to Sand.

As long as I push the “Return to Sport” using the steering wheel button upon startup I don’t have an issue with the modes scrolling by themselves.

And, it seems to alway pick Sand mode, which is the last drive mode selection in the list of modes. In Park, engine running, I just watched the dash as I am scrolling through the drive modes. Sometimes it starts going through all the modes after first click of the Drive Mode knob. Sometimes it starts scrolling after the two clicks to get to Sport mode. Sometimes I’m lucky when I get to Sport mode and it doesn’t continue to scroll to Sand mode.

I will continue to watch the dash to verify that it scrolls through every mode sequentially, to see when I stop on Sport and it winds up at Sand. (It does!)

Trying to keep everything in frame while handholding my phone, pushing the start button, turning mode button and get a good recording is a challenge. But I’ll post one now. This is in Park.

8/4/26 101° with close to 120° inside truck.

This is a work in progress, to say the least. And, I have only 1250 miles on it. I guess I can’t expect it to last forever!
