I was on the beach fishing (Outer Banks) today and while putting a shovel back in the bed I hit my tail light and cracked it. So I’m wondering what it will take to get it repaired? Can I replace the outside plastic cover or do I need to replace the whole thing?

Going to be the whole thing and you will probably crap your pants when you find out what the price is. Especially if it has any blind spot monitoring in it.

Recently had a fender bender accident with my XL that smashed my front headlight and it is going to be $1500 for just the one headlight.

Before you get too carried away, I suggest that you see if there is a product that can fill the cracks, like a windshield chip repair epoxy. I don’t have a specific product in mind, but I bet you could fill it with a clear epoxy and then buff it back out with a headlight polish kit….

And then cover both lights with a heavy paint protection film.

I was hoping I wouldn’t hear that. I know what headlights cost and think $1500 may be on the low end. If it’s not leaking I may just live with it.

Maybe try a windshield repair shop, I've heard of them injecting something in windshields

Probably if I want it done right that might be the way to go.

If it makes you feel any better I did a similar hit on my f150 tail light lens, I was swinging a gas powered weedeater into the bed, but the head of the weedeater did basically the same then you did on yours. Its a 2011 model so I was a little ticked, watched it for a while nothing seem to be happening, thought ok no leaks, well month or two later contestation started building up inside the light. Its never blow a bulb or anything but the bottom edge of the light inside turned back like dirty water or mold. I just letting it go, I call it character

Well, mine is an XL, so it would be on the low end.

If you decide to try and do some type of chip sealing like others are mentioning, just make sure whatever product you use is rated for clear plastic. Use the wrong stuff and it can off gas as it cures and cloud the inside of the lens.

That’s a good point I hadn’t thought of that. Thanks

I came out of a Fred Meyers and walked across the parking lot to where my 2019 Ranger was parked (no one else was parked there and I figured I was safe), only to find my right rear taillight smashed and cracked all over. Too much $$$ to replace the BLIS taillight, so I "painted" it with Super Glue. I glued the broken pieces back in, and filled the cracks with super glue.

BLIS worked great, and I figured I'd wait until something happened where it was worth letting insurance handle it. Took a couple of years, but it caught fire and burned to the ground last December. Glad I didn't buy all that expensive stuff.

You might just want to fill that in lightly with some clear nail polish sealant. Brush it lightly to seal it from moisture and just consider it a battle scar and what NOT to do in the future.

The tech on these things make even little mistakes end up being costly, best to just consider it a little bit of added character.
