I do not have the off-road package. I’d like to take truck on the beach and mild off road locations.

I’m not sure how delicate the underside is without shielding.
How to make it off-road ready?
how does fx4 differ from 4x4?

concern on taking it off-road as stock?

To understand the difference, start by saying that you understand the purpose of a locking differential. If you don't know, the explanation will require much more detail.

Note, it is possible to get a 4x4 non FX4 Ranger WITH a locking differential, but I'm guessing you don't have that option.

FX4 is a couple skid plates and "tuned shocks".

I think if you went to Bilsteins or Rancho rear shocks and could find skid plates, you'd be FX4.

There is a front skid plate, a plastic gas tank plate and I think a differential plate. IDK if any of that is available aftermarket.

If you get a level kit for the front and a 1 " lift in the rear that would also do a lot of good for your situation.

These are all pre morning coffee opinions!!

It's more than that. It's also the terrain management technology. To me, that's THE primary reason to get the FX4 package. Skid plates are easily available aftermarket, and a locking differential is available as a stand-alone.

My XLT is a 4X4 with a locking differential. May be the certain trim package on the non FX4’s that would. I know mine is a standard 4x4 but has the locking differential button
And?

Can the terrain mgmt system be added by Ford? Is it more than just software? I understand you would also need a locking diff too.

Can it be added? I assume anything CAN be done, so I'm guessing it can. I'd also guess that it's cost prohibitive.

If I had a 4x4 but not the FX4 package, I wouldn't consider any additions beyond a locking differential, and I'd probably seek an aftermarket solution. If I wanted the off road tech, I'd trade trucks.
