Hello again ,I'm pretty sure that, the ranger 2.3L I4 engines has had a VERY BARE MINIMUM cam phaser problems if any ,but just asking the members here or know of anyone else if they have experience any problems on the ford rangers from 2019 to 2024 models and also wondering if they upgraded to the new cam phaser design!! I bought mine about 3 months ago with 925 miles on it now , and on the cold start it has very small rattle for a minute then goes away , can anyone help me with all these questions thanks!!

I think LSPI (low speed pre-ignition) is more of a potential issue on the 2.3L than cam phasers have ever been.

Thankfully LSPI is very preventable if you don't stress the engine before the oil is up to temp.

Hey Wayfaring Ranger I just watch a video of the low speed pre ignition, and the first most important factor is using a high quality oil with API SP that are designed for this purpose with direct fuel injection 2nd high quality fuel with a minimum of 88 octane, 3th is your comment about and its just important as the API SP oil LET YOUR VEHICLE WARM UP in especially cold weather until the oil can do its job ,and changing you oil frequently, I'm using 5w-30 mobil 1 advice formula with API SP!!

I don't believe Ive ever heard of a 2.3 with phaser issues. I was told its a completely different design than the V-6's. Its a reliable motor with years of track records. That being said, anything can break.

Hello 👋 friend I agree 👍, I bought a brand new 2024 ranger 2.3l, did my research on engine, and transmission, the transmission is the 10R60 transmission which is the best design!! I have come to the conclusion to change my high quality oil, Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 advanced API SP every 3000 miles because of mainly carbon build up transmission at 25k then 40k after flush, filter, and new oil !!

You'd probably be fine at 5k, unless you drive in very cold or hot or dusty weather, or Tow or stress the motor. Also, probably 60k ont he trans after the initial change. C.

Hey RangerDangerStranger gtsy 👍, I might go 4k ,however cold weather starts ,and need to 3 to 5 minute oil warm up ,in town trips, hot weather in town driving, gas contamination, Amazon price of mobil 1 is about 42 to 45 dollars for oil and filter every 3 months I would rather do that than spend on cleaning carbon build up!! I did notice that the mobil 1 advanced oil is 2 times better than the motorcraft oil, the engine seems more quite with this oil! Also my oil monitor is at 94% with 400 miles versus 83% with 883 miles with the factory motorcraft oil when I changed it ,practically same driving habits!!

Consider sending samples of drain oil to a lab for analysis (blackstone is good, but there are others as well). Pay the extra few dollars to get the TBN as well, which is a measure of how much additive package is left. As your oil wears down the TBN drops and should be changed when or before it drops to 1. The analysis itself will show you the amount of fuel buildup in your oil (maybe from idling, etc) along with silicon and wear metals. After a few reports you should have a real good idea of both how your engine is wearing in and how your favorite brand of oil is holding up under your driving and climate conditions.

On cold start the 2.3L holds the waste gate open just a bit so the turbo doesn't spin up at high idle. After a minute or so, it closes. It can be a little noisy during this process.

hello 👋, on my 2024 ranger 2.3l it been kinda cold where I live in the high teens in early mornings, I have the hood up to start when first starting the pick up, and I can hear what I think is the serpentine belt or pulley etc: screaching for 3 or 4 seconds for a couple of times once the slickness wore down it kinda stopped, yesterday it was 17 degrees and the engine was very quite finally after 1400 miles everything else sounds normal!!

I do hear the camphaser SLIGHTLY rattling when very cold and what ever else but with common sense that tells you it normal, because of cold weather and cold start ,need to wait until the oil warms up 3 minutes or so before you drive !!
