I am very active in the Explorer forums and this is something that has never come up to my recollection. So, I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m just saying I think it’s always been CGI and that overall it should be 95% the same engine. If there’s something out there that disagrees, then please let me know so I can correct myself.

Well that link confirms it, the Explorer uses a CGI block for the 3L. Ford Authority had it wrong. However it's a little weird that it calls out the specific trim levels when stating the block material.

It is kind of strange but all it’s saying is that you have to have the ST, KR, or Plat trim to get that engine further emphasizing that Ford wants you to buy higher trims for more profit.
