Was wiping down the hood of my not yet 2 month old 2024 ranger today to clean up basic bug splatter - nothing significant. Just using some water and a microfiber cloth. Much to my dismay - in this little section the paint basically rubbed right off… as I scrubbed lightly and looked a little closer the paint was really soft and was chipping really easily - and almost looks like it was thin in this little area. Plan to get it in to a dealer to look at soon - hoping something like this is covered under the paint warranty. I’ve never done more than hand wash it with microfiber cloths and I know that the chips were not there before I started. What a bummer in such an obvious spot right in top of the hood.

Anyone else have experience with paint issues and what got covered under warranty?

That almost looks like some solvent or something sat on the paint, making it soft. Anything you can think of along those lines?

Nothing like that. I had just cleaned it yesterday and everything was fine. Had it out for a drive and sat in the driveway for a bit so was just washing a few minor bugs off the hood after I pulled it in. Really weird for sure. I think the chips are just the clear coat - still looks white where it’s chipped - but not sure that does much for me in fixing it up.

Well pls do share what the dealer does; the warranty is supposed to cover manufacturing defects that show up as cracking, peeling, delaminating, dulling, etc.

I have a 2024 XLT Ranger FX4 in the Oxford White (600 miles). I have never seen a vehicle collect stone chips like this one. I have a bug shield and mud guards installed. The majority of the stone chip damage to my Ranger has been on the driver's side of the vehicle (the hood, front corner panel and rear corner panel) I had the same problem with my 2022 Ford Maverick. One of the biggest complaints from Mavericks owners was the paint quality from the factory. I am not saying that this is the case with the Ranger, but I have really learned how to use touch up paint.

I have 2024 black XLSTX and have chipping on the leading right edge of the hood and the tailgate, not normal

That doesn't look right, to me; especially if it was rubbed off so easily.

I'd say that's not a normal amount of damage from a chip.

I haven't had a chance to get it in yet, but looking at it over the week it seems to have hardened up around it - so I'm guessing there was something in whatever bird or bug junk that was on it - combined with rubbing it hard with a microfiber towel while it was fresh and had been sitting in the sun was the cause... and is on me. Disappointing that it was so easy to mar up... but lessons learned I guess.

If it is what it is... do you have any recommendations for how to best touch it up? I know a 100% fix is having the whole hood resprayed... but at the end of the day it's a truck and I expect to use it as a truck so it's unlikely to be the last paint chips it will see. I'd like to make it slightly less visible and to smooth it back out. Lots of YouTube options with different opinions on touchup kits and sanding processes to smooth and buff it out - Dr Colorchip or the Ford OEM touchup sticks. It appears that there is still white paint under the chips, so I'm not sure whether to try filling with just paint, clear coat, or paint and then clear coat.

I've done a lot of woodwork and finishing touchups there - but with my cars I've largely just let be - so don't have much vehicle paint experience.

its because the epa started tearing up the manufacturers about the paint so now paint is more water based in vehicles. check all the other forums and you will see the same paint complaint staring back around 2016-17.

my 2017 nissan titan was exactly the same and so is the wife's 2019 jeep wrangler. i have some chips in the ranger but not nearly as bad as my titan got and the two trucks are the same color, that grey
