Paint Defects - Be Extra Scrutinizing

Had my Ranger Raptor a little over a week now, drove it home from the dealer and parked it in my garage, waiting for an appointment for PPF + Ceramic +Tint as I didn't want to risk anything stupid happening in the interim. Drove up to my appointment today and unfortunately, my detailer was going over the truck and pointed out some serious defects in the factory paint.

Truck has just over 100 miles on it now, pretty bummed. Both driver side doors have paint drips on the bottom edges, rear door has it on the front and back of the door.
The hood has some kind of contaminant under the clear coat that can't be polished out, clay bar won't touch it, etc.

The hood is pretty hard to see I guess except under the right light, there were some buffer swirls on the front edge of the hood that I noticed on delivery but I didn't make an issue out of it as I felt my detailer could fix it no problem, so not sure if that was an attempt to remove them at the dealer. Hard to see under direct sunlight.

The door drips I did not see which is on me I guess, I've never seen such a thing and would not think it would be able to leave the factory like that.

I've contacted my salesman and he says the Service Manager will be contacting me; not super thrilled to be looking at not-so-minor paint work on a brand new truck. Drove ~two hours to grab this thing at MSRP and am in disbelief.

Good catch. I should be picking up my Ranger Raptor this week and will check out the paint. Might get a small discount on price if I find something.

Definitely something to watch closely when you pick up. I picked mine up over a month ago, 3 chips in the paint on back door edge, 4-5 spots (I believe most call them "fish eyes"), looks like an air bubbly popped? Front bumper out of alignment by 1/4", passenger door needed to be "centered". I had it a week, took it back to dealer, they had it a month, called me that it was ready, drove 1.5 hr to pick it up and they hadn't addressed the issues. They still have it and I'm in a loaner.

A paint depth meter would probably tell a lot. Looks like it was possibly rework post manufacturing.

That's pretty bad man, I really feel for you, I don't get it honestly.

Got a reply back that they are going to "take care of it", but I'm not sure what that means at this point. I'm not too keen on having 1/3 of my brand new truck repainted.

The thing that is killing me about this - this is my second Ford, the first experience was a fully loaded 2016 Mustang GT, I loved that car to death. Shortly after break-in, one of the bearings went out in the transmission, took 6 weeks to get a new bearing, they put it in, and same exact problem. The entire time I was pleading with Ford Corporate to just replace the damn transmission - they eventually did, but by them it was 8 weeks out and I went through the Lemon Law process. One of the most arduous, stupid, and nonsensical things I've ever had to go through. They had a million chances to make it right.

I vowed to never buy a Ford again, well fool me twice and it's on me. I didn't think in a million years I'd have any problems with this "halo" of a sorts, ~60K truck.

The new water based paint is terrible. I've got so many paint chips after 5k miles that I'm just saving to wrap this truck when the time comes. Won't be buying another vehicle based on factory color, LOL

I just went over mine three times last weekend with a clay bar, then with Meguiar's polish to prep for the final step of ceramic coat. In all that detail process, I can honestly say I never thought to check the bottom of the doors for paint runs. It's your truck, and you can obviously do what you want, but I would not be sending mine back to have the doors painted by the local Ford dealer body shop unless I had seen multiple examples of their work blending and finishing dark, metallic paint. Those runs at the bottom of the door may be the least of your worries if they decide to respray both doors and the paint doesn't match.

Now the trash under the clearcoat on the hood is a different story. I would definitely want that redone, and while you still run the same risks of it not blending properly with the rest of the truck, that's an obvious flaw in the factory paint that is much more noticeable and distracting than the runs at the bottom of the doors.

The big deal on the forums when I got my GT350 was the problem with everyone having paint "boogers" at the lower corners of nearly every body panel, but especially the hood and trunk lid. It was basically clearcoat dripping at the corners, and in some cases it was so bad that they would chip off leaving exposed metal. I left mine alone - again, not trusting my local Ford body shop to be able to fix it properly. Adds "character".

The hood would be the only thing id probably look at. You are gonna do you, but ive owned plenty of cars with thin paint, and you just end up living with it. At the end of the day, the artist (or owner in this case) knows every flaw because its yours, anyone else will never ever see it or notice it.

Spoke to the owner of the detail shop this morning and he told me he'd be able to get the spots out of the hood and fenders with some wet-sanding, they are still working on it but he seemed very confident they'd get them all out; their test spots came out well according to him, so I'm rolling with that for now and can get the PPF slapped on the front at least.

As for the doors, he told me it's probably going to be better to live with it as it'll likely end up worse with anything the dealer wants to do - echoing what you guys are saying. He also told me that since the pandemic, many of the cars he sees have some kind of defect like this, especially Fords,

There are few quality bodyshops in the area that I might just stop by and see what they think, but it's probably going to be tilting at windmills.

Still waiting to hear back from the dealer to see what their suggested resolution might be.

Dont be fooled, every brand has issues with paint, its not new to covid pre/after. Look at any car forum and youll see. Fix the hood, have a few beers and enjoy the truck. Once you inevitably get that first door ding this will all seem a no big deal. The shopping carts will find you, they always do!

I purchased a 2021 Colorado z71 in Dec of 2022. First time I washed it I noticed a paint drip defect at the bottom of the tailgate. Chevy said no problem and repainted the tailgate. They did a beautiful job and it looked great.

Fast forward 2 plus years. Decided to trade it in for a 2024 Ranger XLT FX4 4X4 . I was expecting a certain amount for a trade in. The salesman called me and said they would give me about 4k less on my trade in because the carfax report said my vehicle had minor damage repair. Long story short the finance manager gave me the amount I was looking for based on me showing him the repair receipt etc.

Just make sure that who ever repairs your truck doesn't put the wrong repair code that will end up on your Carfax report
I was able to have Carfax remove the error on thier report.
Finance Mgr said he seen that happen before

Michigan Assembly doesn't use waterborne paint, all layers are solvent borne.

Then the repairs that never show upon Carfax.
My 2011 F350 was hit by a deer. $11,500. worth of damage.
Never showed on Carfax and was repaired by a Ford dealers body shop.
Took like 6 weeks.

Finally got the truck back yesterday from the detailer. They put a hell of a lot of work into it and it looks a lot better; there were also spots on the roof.
But those spots caused etching in the clear, so whatever got on it was extremely nasty. They wet sanded the spots on the doors and with the PPF it's much harder to see unless you zero in on it.

Haven't decided if I'm still going to pursue some kind of body shop repair with the dealer, guess I need to spend more time driving it to see if I can see the hood pits from the drivers seat under more varied lighting conditions and let the PPF bake in the sun for a couple days.
