In the poconos pa. we got 4" of snow today. It was my first chance to use my 4x4 in the snow. The back roads and rolling hills were covered in snow and many cars struggled and some got stuck. My wife and I had some errands to run, so we put it in 4x4 and took our time and all went well. I am very happy with the way our Ranger performed in the snow.

It is indeed fun to get our rangers out in the snow. I’ve been around eastern pa and the poconos in the snow this year an I’m surprised how good the truck was without even engaging 4wd. I have Michelin x-ice snow tires on and those tires and the traction control have been great. I was surprised too that when I couldn’t start out in a hill for lack of traction that locking my diff did nothing to help, but just engaging 4wd got me unstuck as if the roads were dry.

We were out again today and we got more snow. Our Ranger handled the snow really well.

Did you put any weight in your bed or was it empty?

The bed was empty. More snow again today. The Ranger, dog, wife and me are happy driving and playing in the snow.

it seems to me that with the shorter beds and wider cabs the weight distribution is closer to 50-50 these days.

but maybe that’s my imagination

looks like you have a good reason for remote start.

I think that’s right. I think back to my old 1992 Dakota 5.2, which was a real handful in the snow. Back then, you’d add weight to the bed during winter just to make it drivable. The weight distribution on these crew cab short beds is way better. Plus, these newer trucks are lighter in the front without an iron block V8 leading the way (I do miss that engine, tho).

Tires have also come a long way since then.

I do member that the rear wheel drive trucks needed weight in the bed. My 04 f150 4x4 that is about the same size as my 24 Ranger always did good in the snow.
