I decided to add a retractable bed step using a modified Tacoma step, which was the cheapest ($117cdn)on Amazon. Made a bracket using 3”x5” x 1/4” x 6” long angle iron. Only drilled one hole in the hitch bracket frame. There is an oval through hole where a electrical connector clips in on the outer side of frame. Relocated it and the hole is available through to the inside face of the frame. Had to drill a 3/8” hole closest to the bumper on the outer side. Before all this metal work, I did cardboard and plywood mock-ups to test fit everything.

Sorry, it was designed using cardboard templates and existing frame holes. Blow up the photos for reference. A lot of trial and error fitting.

Thanks for your writeup. I'm tempted to try it too but my metal working skills are almost zero. I took wood shop in school haha.

I am utterly shocked that not a single aftermarket company makes one for our Rangers?

I used the ideas from this thread with a Tacoma step, the one I got from Amazon had a weird angle, and took a lot of fab mods to get it done. A super big problem is the factory towing set up, which is why it's hard to find a aftermarket step. This is the bracket I had to make, installation took some special tools and a step drill.

Wow, good job! A lot more complicated than mine was. Whatever works is the diy code!
