I noted a recent thread on high old temps. I saw my coolant/oil temps go up on a longer drive when the load was light and there was no reason for the extra heat other than the shutters closed for some reason.

I wish there was a way to see what the status of the shutters and even control them. In the summer, I would like to ensure they stay open. I have read that if the AC is on, they stay open. But in the winter, I would like to have them closed.

Why? It's for emissions and fuel economy. Has no negative effect on the vehicle. At light loads they choke out flow a bit to raise temps for better combustion where thermal stress is low. This helps with 1. fuel economy and 2. emissions (cleaner burn) and theoretically, less carbon buildup over time.

Having watched engine coolant and oil temps for over a million miles in gas and diesel pickups.....I find it concerning when running unladen (running empty with no wind or load) and the coolant temps out of the blue start to rise to 200 and oil temps get to 220. While neither is a concerning temp, what was the cause of the temp rise when nothing changed from an operating condition....other than the shutters closed. Why would they close when it’s 80 degrees out??? This was all cruising on the interstate for 100s of miles.

On the flip side, when operating in temps below zero, I can see a benefit of the shutters being closed all the time. Thus, the interest in seeing the shutter positio

There was a time when we added winter fronts (....manual shutters), removed fans and did whatever we needed to get/keep operating temps at a normal condition when driving in arctic conditions. All the time, closely watching coolant/oil temps. Same in the summertime. You never expect warmer than normal temps when running empty. You want to see some reserve for when one is pulling a trailer or anything that causes the engine to work hard.

JMHO.....

Interesting anecdote I discovered this weekend while washing my truck: with truck running (to spray off the forward facing parts of the shutters from bugs etc) and the AC on, it opened the shutters in front of the AC condenser / radiator but had the intercooler shutters closed. Now, the truck was not up to full temp so not sure what effect that has on it

What's the purpose of the rear shutters on the intercooler? There wouldn't be any airflow with the front shutters closed.
