Spare tire retreival

I was trying to get the spare tire down but the T end of the rod would not engage with the winch. I got under the truck and guided the rod through the plastic funnel underneath but it was almost like the hole was too small for the T end of the bar. I tried to spin the rod but all it did was tear up the plastic in the funnel.

Does anyone have any experience with this? What am I doing wrong?

Turn it around and put the square end in.

And for everyone who hasn’t taken the spare out and put it back (edited out a type-o from auto-“correct”), or used the jack to raise the vehicle, please consider doing so in the comfort of a safe place so you do t go through a learning curve in the dark, heavy rain, with traffic flying by inches from your backside.

An electric spare tire winch!

I had the same issue with mine and I enlarged the hole at the end of the funnel and works great now. Square end would not fit through funnel.
