Okay, I was not happy about the J brace thing and I still think FORD should recall/reimbuse those that have already done it. But HOLY SHIT, look at what they are selling for the TACOMAS!!
Unbelievable, but they try and sell like it gives you an extra tie down.

I’ve seen these mentioned in the past. And just like the JBraces I’d assume most Taco owners don’t know about them either. While harder to install, at least the JBraces don’t reduce functionality of the bed.

I wonder if this has been an issue on most or all mid-sizes for a while, but rare enough that it has taken this long to study, diagnose and fix.

I thought the J braces were designed to beef up the front of the bed. They go on the back like these people have been buying on Tacoma's?

This really isn't that crazy. They sell bed stiffeners for most trucks. On the F150 Raptors if you do a ton of off-roading the bedsides will actually start to separate if you don't have these bed supports. Definitely not comparable to the J-brace issue

How is it different from the j brace issue? The description describes basically the same issues that require j braces (tents above the rail, above the rail racks)

On our trucks if you buy a topper from Ford, they will install the J-braces because they know the bed can't handle the weight. Ford knows its a problem and sells a solution themselves.

I could be wrong, but I doubt that Toyota is installing this type of brace on Tacomas for those that purchase a topper. Until Toyota themselves is acknowledging a problem, then this is just someone selling a product. A company can say anything they want to sell their product

The back of the bed is an open structure so needs to be pretty strong otherwise it flexes excessively. The front of the bed is a more solid closed in structure so generally not a problem. It's like convertible vs hardtop. Toyota has had this issue for a long time, they don't see it as a problem.

The very first year Toyota made a truck, I saw one at the local auto show and I noticed how the sides were wobbling with the tailgate open, more than any other truck I've seen. Cant believe it's still an issue. But yeah, like Dillon M said, this is not uncommon. If you have a box with no top and you remove one side, the two corners closest to the open top of the removed side, will be somewhat flimsy. Its not a design issue, it's basic physics. I wouldn't mind something like this for my Ranger Raptor.
