Just picked up a new 2025 XLT and looking at how to remove the tailgate so I can install a camper. Looks like a pain in the ass… at least 4 bolts (2 for tailgate, 2 for cables), plus releasing the torsion bar. Am I missing something?

Also, I can’t find anything on the internet about a “tailgate removal kit”, I.e. dummy plug for the truck side wiring. Does this exist?

Did Ford not think people were going to actually use this truck?

Any help would be appreciated.

I haven’t tried to remove the tailgate on mine, but I think from a camper perspective the payload capacity isn’t very high. I’m assuming you are installing a super lightweight? Even those can get to the gross weight limit really quick once you add water, gear, and the meatbags sleeping in it

What model are you thinking?

The tailgate cables don't slip off over the bolt, like in the old days? I never looked, is why I am asking? Than shouldn't the hinges have that cut out, like trucks from the old days had?

Unless they removed all that stuff to prevent tailgate theft? I remember when that was a huge deal, mid to late 90s

Im looking at a Four Wheel Camper shell model (~800 lbs), I’ve had a number of them and run em in a bunch of different trucks. I’m not worried
about payload, and know how to set up a suspension to properly carry a load. This ranger has 200lbs more capacity than my old full-size Tundra. Plus this Ranger is run all over the world and has a 2,000+ lbs capacity in other markets with different rear springs.

I don’t really even care if I have to unbolt a bunch of stuff in the tailgate, although it is annoying…

Im most concerned about Ford not offering a method for running with the tailgate off without the computer going haywire.

Someone must have pulled there tailgate on the forum, right?

Thanks for the idea, but I had already tried that... videos are all for the old style tailgates with the removable cables and pull out at 45 degrees style gates.

It's probably one of those deleted items for 6G, because my 5G had a plug cover in the glove box specifically for the removal of the tail gate.
