That isn't going to work very well if your rear bumper hits the ground with your trailer connected.

I don't tow when I'm offroad, so it's not a big concern for me.

In the odd instance that this becomes much of an issue, I'll pop out the connector from its slot, tie it up further up behind the bumper and run an extension out (at which point the wire thickness is still less than the thickness of the metal sticking out next to it that'll take hits first).
