My 25 Ranger should be delivered tomorrow afternoon. Dealer installed Waypoint GPS, which I'll likely remove and toss in the lower drawer of my tool chest with all the other junk that I'll never need. They zero'd out the line item charge, but it's already there and they plan to leave it. Their web site extolls the virtues of their system and the service - plus I've already received an email from them that states in part:

Congratulations on your new vehicle purchase, and thank you for choosing the Waypoint Protect Vehicle and Family Protection System! With your vehicle purchase, you have unlocked the premium benefits of our Waypoint Protect System which will be valid through December 01, 2030

Waypoint Protect is a simple plug-and-play GPS system engineered to provide peace of mind for your family and vehicle.
Before I toss it, I was curious if there was anyone here that has experience with Waypoint and whether it might have any redeeming value. Otherwise, it goes in the bin.

Thanks,
Patrick

I have never heard of that company, in particular, but arent those usually installed so the dealer can come get the vehicle if anything happens

First I've heard of this company. I did check the website from the link. Nothing I'd be interested in and certainly would have pushed back at the dealer.

With my former Tacoma, the dealer installed one of those blinking third brake lights. I resisted that, but still drove home with it. Despised the stupid thing.

My former Wrangler JL came with this module attached to my OBD port and stuff over a driver's kick panel. I discovered the harness hanging out the day I got home. Promptly removed it, cut the wiring, and tossed into the trash. It was clearly a GPS tracker.

Just like what Mick Jagger sings in the song "Stattered,"

This town's full of money grabbers (Shadoobie, shattered)
Go ahead, bite the Big Apple, don't mind the maggots, uh-huh (Shadoobie, shattered) (Shadoobie, shattered)

A dealer installed GPS tracker, nothing good can of from that. I would have made a condition of the sale be the removal of this equipment or no deal.

Decided that I would read their Privacy Policy and Terms and Conditions to see if there is an opt-out option. The Privacy Policy only refers to the web site - nothing about data collection from the device. Link to the T&C is circular - bringing you back to the same page. I did find a copy by web search, but no idea if it's current.

As I said, I'm not paying for it, so it will be removed shortly after delivery. This is the first time that I've bought a vehicle without seeing it in person first. The GPS disclosure came up late in the process. As I mentioned in the OP, I was a bit curious if the service really had any value. Apparently, there are none that outweigh the privacy issues.

Well, that took about five seconds. The passthrough OBD connector was actually sticking out from under the dash and the unit was just tucked behind the kick panel. Little bugger must have an internal battery as it was still phoning home after I removed it.

Time to exercise a hammer or sledge and put that little bugger out of your misery....or.....seal it up in some nice heavy duty water tight bags and let it take a trip to the landfill broadcasting location data to its little heart's content. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea of Waypoint tracking a garbage truck all the way to the landfill then never move again!

Sometimes it's a requirement by the bank or auto loan company. Makes it easier for them when it comes to repos. Best to always check your loan documents as removal can be considered a breach of the loan contract.
