Ford Ranger WTF is that noise?! IMG_0292


It’s the metallic noise/rumbling you hear when I take my foot off the gas.

No BOV, no engine mods.

I thought for the life of me it was the DS turbo dying on me. According the the dealership, turbos and wastegates were
tested and are fine but they haven’t been able to find the root cause yet.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Im far from an expert, but the timing of the noise seems like it would have something to do with the wastegate. Higher rev, building boost, then letting off the gas. Thats when a BOV would be actuated (if you had one). All of the hose connections were tested as tight? Does it make that noise if you open the hood and rev it in park?

Definitely not normal man, the video doesn’t quite do it justice. It’s gotten progressively worse over the past 2 weeks and the truck felt like it was going to come to a stuttering stop at one stage as it rumbled.

That was my initial thought too, but dealer says it’s not the turbos or the wastegate. I can only assume they tested to make sure all the hoses were tight.

It doesn’t make the noise when it’s in park so cant test with the hood open.

I'm with sauce on what I hear. Wastegate metal to metal rattle. Just a guesstimate. I doubt you'll replicate unless under a load as that what protects the turbo and engine fast from over boost conditions. :like:

I would have thought it had one of those aftermarket wastegate valves.
That was the only thing I thought I was hearing that I really don't ever hear with mine.
I have heard it in other videos where they add those aftermarket valves to make it more audible.

Other than that more pronounced blowoff hiss sound, it sounded pretty normal to me as well.

I believe the OP, I am just not hearing much in the video that sounded like a problem.

I hear it. It sounds kind of like a loose washer that only rattles at a certain rpm. Its faint.

I say that because i had a loose motor mount that made a weird sound when the engine torqued a certain way. Mine sound like a quarter when you spin it on end and was slowing down.

put the boost guage on the dash, and look and see if it corresponds with the boost level. I got the smaller screen in my xlt. but I go to off road and click engine info I get trans temp, oil psi and boost psi(well set to metric is showing up as bar not psi)

Maybe you have a vacuum hose leak that becomes a problem with a certain engine rev level and that is resulting in shenanigans elsewhere.

The big first question here, has the service shop confirmed they have been able to reproduce the issue? If not, they will be blindly searching for a cause, not a good approach.

But what's up with tire pressures?
Hard to really see, but left rear at 29, right rear at 37?

Could be, man, I honestly have no idea. Unfortunately for me; neither does the dealer.

The best way I can describe it is a sound like a handful of small metal particles being spun and bounced around inside a metal tube as air rushes in (lifting foot off the gas).

Can’t check either as the truck is still at the dealership as they try to get to the bottom of it.

I made sure to do a test drive with them to replicate the noise so they can’t come back with their BS of “unable to replicate” like they did 2 months ago. It’s gotten significantly worse since then.

I see your eye sight’s at 20/20!

That was gas station’s air compressors acting up when I was re-inflating the tires.

Put it on the rollers and listen to things. Chassis dynos are pretty popular. You can spin it up and coast it down. Plus you get a nice paper.
