Just noticed there is only one damper for the tailgate. Assume this is correct?

Yep. Just one strut on the tailgate. It seems to slow the lowering of the tailgate just fine with only one.

If you had 2 they would compete with each other and it wouldn't go down smooth  . Tailgates light as a feather.

That isn't how they work.
If you had 2 the the tailgate would lower at the same speed and smoothness as it does now. But it would be Much harder to close. Since it has an assist spring for closing this would be counter productive...

I've added a strut to the tailgate of my last 3 trucks. Best $20 spent! 👍

Just saying rhe 2 struts aren't the same even if one is .1 second difference they aren't going to work together, maybe find on a suspension as you don't really notice it.

i always thought that torsion spring was enough since it helped with closing the tailgate. the strut is fine too but i could have lived without it.

maybe they could have taken that off and left the mirror lights on the 26 models?

Looks like your support cable on the left has a little slack in it as mine does. Considering tightening it up, but what a PITA, not sure it'll be worth it.

it might be interesting to take the strut off and see how it works with just the torsion spring.

I've used plenty of two damper systems without issue

I've used plenty of tail gates without springs and dampers. I never thought much about it one way or another.

I suspect one strut was sufficient. It also sort of interferes with the cable that holds the tail gate.

Removing the turn signal light from the mirror seems like an odd choice from Ford.

But then, they seem to make all kinds of minor odd choices.

My F150 Lariat came with an OEM tailgate assist mounted inside the rear taillight cavity. Less likely to get damaged. Wonder if someone makes one like that?

Speaking of one or two struts, does anyone’s right hand cable poke out when you close the gate?
Mine doesn’t quite poke out. But because the damper forces the cable to the inside toward the rear light and the gap is a bit bigger on that side it is very visible.

I imagine with some trucks the gap is big enough for the cable to come through.

If the cable would pass over the damper toward the inside of the bed, it would fold over better and not be noticeable.
