Drove 8 hours today.
Mountains, sage desert, twisty canyons.
Drove through rain, snow flurries, bright sun, blowing sand, high winds.
On straight roads it's tedious, the lack of centering feel and high steering effort even on Comfort is tiring. I finally turned lane centering back on and it helped.
But, on the curvy canyon roads it's huge fun!
But damn do you have to watch that speedometer. It makes speed so effortlessly you don't realize it! Once when I finally got a safe stretch to pass a semi, I looked down and muttered "wow," and wife said "75?" and I said "No, um... 97!" She said "holy sh!t !" Later I asked her if that seemed scary and she said "NO not at all!". The ride is so smooth...

This is going to be an interesting trip....

Have a safe and fun drive man. The wife and i did something similar last year in our 4runner before we bought the Raptor. We left SE Virginia and drove thru West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada and Arizona. We stopped in Moab, Vegas, Grand Canyon, Sedona and Mesa. On the way home we left Arizona and drove thru New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and then home. 6100 miles or less. Never been out west before and it was so cool seeing things I’d ever only seen on tv or in movies. We have one BEAUTIFUL nation!
  awesome! I traveled for much of my professional career but didn't have time to enjoy things. This will be something different. Today was great. Can't wait for tomorrow...

The country side is amazing from the road. People asked why we didn’t fly out west and rent a car. I enjoy driving and wanted to see it from the road. It took us 22 days averaging a little over 400 miles a day. We didn’t have two months to make more stops and spend more time at various locations. I was amazed at how much empty space there is out there. In Utah there were over 100 miles between exits on I-70 with an 80 mph speed limit. I’ve never seen that in the east. It was an adventure for us. Too cool. We’re thinking of driving through New England later this year. Still working on planning that drive. Be safe out there man!

I think cruise control is very handy for limiting your speed. Sound like it will be a great trip!

I might turn the ADD back on. I use cruise control as much as possible. Wife never does. Still getting used to the toggle button...
I'm starting to appreciate the lane assist. Amazing how it follows a curve, I find it's actually helpful!

Even without cruise on, you can set a limiter for speed. It is weird when it hits it because the truck just shuts down the power, but you can "pedal" through it if needed too (foot to the floor)

Try Sport Mode on those twisties, it is great fun, the truck feels very planted and secure, but the tires have minimal lateral grip and it is too easy to drive too fast for the curves. I really like my gps, it is mounted up high and I keep it at a 0.2 mile per inch scale on roads like that, it lets me know how tight the next turn is, and also if it is one of those killer “decreasing radius” turns that the Idaho Panhandle is so full of. If zoomed out beyond that scale, it is not detailed enough to be helpful.

However, if you drive like this, you run a real risk of nailing a deer or coyote on a blind curve, don’t even consider doing it at dawn or dusk near a body of water, when wildlife migrates. What will really make you pucker is cresting a steep hill and finding half a dozen elk standing in the highway…

That sounds super fun Mt Rushmore and the black hills are very nice. Since you are headed to Nebraska,Kansas and Missouri you should make a stop in Sioux Falls and check out falls park. It is about a 5 hour drive east on 90 then after you can take I29 south and that takes you to Nebraska,Kansas,Missouri. While you are in Sioux Falls you are also about 15 mins from Minnesota and Iowa so add those on the list as states you touched by lol. I was born and raised in California and moved to Sioux Falls about 10 years ago it is def nice place to stop and check out. I also lived in Kansas & Missouri make sure to stop at Joes or Jack stack bar b q if you can you will not be disappointed. Happy trails and keep those pictures coming
