'26 RR - How Do I Shift From Park To Neutral With The Engine Off?

On a '26 Ranger Raptor, how do I shift from park to neutral with the engine off so I can manually push it a couple feet?

What I've tried that didn't work:
- When the engine is on, and I put it into neutral, then turn it off, the transmission electronically locks it back into park.
- With engine off, press ignition button so only accessories are on, then press brake with my foot while attempting to move the shifter out of park. Shifter is locked.

I've searched the owners manual and this forum, and haven't been able to find an answer to this question.

Push the M button on the side of the shifter when in neutral. I think a message will even pop up and confirm that it’ll stay in Neutral

So I have to start the engine, put it in neutral, then push the M button?

Look under towing. There is a way that involves accessing inside of center console. Easy to do and I can't remember any more details.

Open the center console storage area. Bring a little pick. You will find a a removable cover towards the front.

Once removed you will see a orange / red latch. Pull it and lock it.

It is spring loaded like a mechanical handbrake and it will lock in place to release the park pin inside the transmission.

You can unlock it by pulling it a little to release tension and use a screwdriver to unlock the pin but it's best to just turn on the car it will self reset (preferred way)

Make sure you have chokes on the wheels if your parking brake is not set as well...

Ask me how I know....did a big mistake during oil change (sucking oil from the top)

Put the ignition into accessory mode. Then push in the brake pedal put transmission into neutral. Then you can push your Ranger. I do this frequently.

With a key start, putting the ignition into accessory mode is just like cars have been for decades. For push button start push the start button without having your foot on the brake.

Your 23 XLT must be different. On the Raptor shifter will not come out of park unless the engine is started. It automatically goes back to park when engine is shut off or door is opened

My Ranger is a 2026 XLT, but it is certainly possible the Raptor behaves differently. After you have your Raptor in accessory mode (i.e. the instrument panel and the infotainment screen are booted up) are you remembering to push and hold the brake pedal as you move the transmission shifter to neutral? I just did this procedure on my 2026 XLT yesterday.

Note that you must leave it in accessory mode with the transmission in neutral as you push it. Also, I have the driver door open the entire time I do this but I'm not sure this is necessary (I'm always standing on the garage floor by the drivers seat) during this process.

^This works on my '19 Explorer. It does not work on the '26 Ranger Raptor.

My Ranger is a 2026 XLT, but it is certainly possible the Raptor behaves differently. FWIW, I ordered a hard copy of the owner's manual and case ($70). I'm a paper guy and it's too challenging to go back and forth with the owners manual pdf on my iphone - lol.

Did you try the canvas latch in the center console? Only way to put in neutral without battery power I think.

I removed the cover, and pulled the latch while I was reading the manual.

After performing some other tasks, the manual then instructed me to unhook the battery terminals, etc to put back to stock. It’s at that point that I stopped.

Why? Because all I want to do is push the truck two feet in my garage without starting it.

I’m not going through all that. There has to be an easier way.

What if: Say I thought I had an engine problem. I shut the truck off and didn't want to harm the engine any more. A flatbed tow truck came. How are they going to get it on the flatbed? Do you know these procedures?

I unhooked the negative (almost always 10mm...) and put a wood block on the wheel while waiting for the tow truck.

I put it in neutral with that latch.

Then with a screw driver, you pull on the locked latch to remove tension and push on the pin. You re-engage Park by doing so.

That's how you tow the truck as well with another truck in the wild...

But when you plug the battery back the truck will auto flip in park.

I generally don't derail threads, but what was the outcome of the hose stuck in the dip stick tube?
On my Lincoln 2.7, the dip stick tip sits in a cylindrical well which has a small bleed hole that allows the well to slowly equalize with the oil level in the oil pan.
I assumed the Ranger would have a similar setup so never bothered trying an evacuator.
And now for sure I'll never try it.
