I have a 2024 2.3 Ranger XLT FX4 4X4. Noticed when I press the manual shift button it shows which gear the transmission is in. If I press and hold it I can lock the transmission gear selection. Can someone give me an example of when this should be used and it's benefits.

If you’re towing you can lock out the higher gears, or when going downhill you can lock out gears so you don’t need to ride the brakes?

it’s similar to pressing the OverDrive button on older automatics - that would lock out the higher overdrive gear so the trans wouldn’t use the overdrive gear. In this case being a 10speed you have more control over which gears you can lock out, I think from memory gears 8-10 are all overdrive gears

My only thought is to use it when towing, but I find the tow mode does a pretty good job of finding the right gear (e.g., downshifting when descending steeply). I haven't bothered with the gear lockout feature.

On my '21, I would lock out 8 - 10 when driving in town at speeds below 40. It keeps the trans from shifting to 8 or 9 when doing only 40 mph.
FYI, 8th, 9th, and 10th gear are all over drives. 7th is 1:1

Related, but somewhat diverging from the original question (which has been answered) - when I change to the manual shift feature, the tachometer shows rpms. Is there any way to show rpms when it is in auto shift mode? I can use forscan if that’s the workaround but I haven’t seen it in there either.

It should be in your menu options that you can get using the steering wheel menu, not the big center display. I went through mine the other day, and changed my speedometer to a round one, and added RPMs which shows up on one side. Then when driving if I hit the arrow on the steering wheel, it shows up three more sets of gauges, one is Turbo, one is engine temperature, and other is oil pressure- to the right of the round speedometer.
