I was intermittently smelling coolant after shutting the truck off, and took it into the dealer this week.

They were having trouble diagnosing it, and finally figured out that it was leaking coolant at the back of the motor, and dripping on the exhaust which is why no puddle was to be found.

Now, 3 days later they've brought in a factory tech and have determined that there is a casting /machining issue with the passenger side head and at a minimum it will need to be replaced, or swap the entire motor.

I'm obviously not thrilled about a dealership tech getting that deep into the engine with only 8k miles. This now apparently lies with an FSE (field service engineer) to determine the next course of action, and they expect to have the truck for a couple weeks.

Has anyone experience similar? Is there any recompense to push for an extended warranty, etc?

This is the first new vehicle I've ever bought, out of the 15+ that i've owned. What a bummer.

Definitely push for an extended warranty. I've not had engine concerns thankfully but had numerous other things and Ford provided me with a PremiumCare 5yr 75K extended service plan.

This is posted in the Raptor section of the forum and under their profile name it says Raptor so......probably the 3.0L V6 that's in the Raptor
Ah, good job Detective :) I’d imagine you’re correct. I followed the link from the top-level of the forum and didn’t see anything under his profile when I looked. Not sure if that’s on my mobile client or my old eyes.

was your coolant level dropping? I faintly smell coolant sometimes from the front end but the level in the tank isn't dropping

It didn't drop an appreciable amount, at least that I noticed. Never saw a drop on the ground.

I actually think mine is doing this as well. I have 6k on mine too. I mentioned the smell and the abundance of moisture in the coolant fill tank to the dealership. They said they didn’t see anything and that the condensation was normal. My nose is pretty spot on usually.
I’m going to use yours as evidence. What dealership and what city/state is yours at? 2024 model?

Well that stinks (no pun intended). If a machining/casting issue it may be lurking in a lot of 3.0L engines in that production run. Guess I’ll have to start sniffing around mine now at 7500 miles. I’ll look at mine & see I see any staining on the passenger side exhaust.

To be fair, that's just what I was told so far.

Could be right, could be just a simple leak. Who knows. Agreed that's if it's actually a casting/machining issue that probably doesn't bode well.

Either way they've had the truck since Monday and are footing the bill for a loaner

Any chance you could see if they could send you a photo of where the leak is? I have a similar smell and coolant loss.
