Anyone try installing their own "DIY" molle panels or cargo management?

I'm looking to organize my bed a little bit more securely. I have a couple of off-roading/camping trips planned for the summer and would prefer if my bags, containers, and gear weren't rolling around in the back.

Problem is, the molle panels are ridiculously expensive and the OEM cargo rails from Ford are also expensive and don't seem to be very useful. Curious to see if anyone's tried some cost-saving or DIY methods to secure cargo in their beds. I have a soft folding tonneau cover, but that shouldn't get in the way. I'm pretty close to just cutting some plywood, painting it, and bolting it to the inside of the bed. I've seen some people modifying shelf units from hardware stores and using them as molle panels, which would be pretty cool. Curious to see everyone's thoughts.

I used unistrut in my older frontier bolted to stock holes in the bed and then it let me have tons of places to attach to. It was the same dimensions as the stock cargo management system

Use HDX cargo bins, about $10 each at Home Depot - plan it carefully and they will fill the bed from side to side at the front with no slop, and you can get a flat load floor on their lids too.

You DO need a non skid bedliner under them, the Bed Rug classic works great and you don’t have to use the velcro.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’ll definitely look into those containers. I tried searching, but couldn’t really find a DIY project that coincided with my preferences.

i was in the same boat as you and ended up making my own slider and it can hold 6 of the 9.5" tall totes from lowes/home depot. it does add some weight (about 75-80 lbs) but it is solid and makes getting to my gear SO EASY now. still gotta paint it up and get it water proof since my tonneau cover leaks like a damn siv!

I went with homemade slider and Packout mounts for my trips. Split in the middle so I can use both or just one or the other.

dude, that setup is awesome... does your tonneau cover leak at all? i would not be able to use particlal board like that in my truck because my tonneau leaks a TON. How did you secure the front of those boards to keep them from flipping up when the weight is all out on the back. I love that secondary slideout table... freaking brilliant... now i wanna add something like that to my slider. I really like that you can pull this out really easy if you need to.

dude, that setup is awesome... does your tonneau cover leak at all? i would not be able to use particlal board like that in my truck because my tonneau leaks a TON. How did you secure the front of those boards to keep them from flipping up when the weight is all out on the back. I love that secondary slideout table... freaking brilliant... now i wanna add something like that to my slider. I really like that you can pull this out really easy if you need to.

So far just the standard mitigations. Plugged as many holes in the bed as I could and added seals wherever I could.

I bought a 3/4" thick Melamine panel for my base. I treated and painted the exposed cuts and has resisted moisture so far. Added textured feet to the bottoms so they don't slide on the textured bedliner.

No issue with tipping. The board goes all the way to the front and I usually have some weight on the section that sits under the roller cover pan.

I had a very specific want. I used builtrights’s universal panels with rivet nuts to attach. Provided exactly what I wanted and no more.
