Bad MPG

What grade fuel? These turbos thrive on 91 and 93 octane. I’m getting 16mpg right now combined in Western Pennsylvania with a lot of hills. I have 385 miles on the truck to date. I’m sure it will get better once I hit 1k and dump the factory oil, at least I hope so.

I’ve been filling up with 89. I’m now considering getting the oil changed in another 1k miles to see if that helps.

I really don't think you're really getting bad mileage. Not any worse then the rest of us. Which seems the most common range is 15-20mpg depending on conditions.

That 12mpg your showing is because the truck must have been idled for 3 hour or more and only drove 40 miles. Your truck is showing the criteria it is using to come up with the 12 mpg it is showing.

3 hours and 40 min of run time and only 40 miles traveled.

That much idling will yield mileage like that with about any gas powered vehicle.

Try resetting it and see what it gets without all the idle time.

I am sure if a person was racing it out in the desert or running hard in an extreme environment 12mpg or even worse is possible.

But I get the feeling that is not the case here.

I'm at around 850 miles and I have not reset the mpg on the dash; I'm at 14.4mpg I believe from this morning commuting in (about a 26 mile drive in to work). I switched to that dash function that shows your fuel mileage and noticed that I drive pretty heavy-footed. This truck is over 70mph without trying or giving it any thought. Truthfully, it drives like a sports car (a very big sports car).

I feel like I'm going to have to modify my driving style (heavy gas pedal) to improve the gas mileage. Note: I am coming from a 2011 FJ Cruiser with 285's on it so I was pretty used to about 15mpg (maybe better, I quit monitoring mpg at the pump a while ago).

I have not changed the tire pressure from whatever the dealer set it, but I think it's around 39. Interesting that these may improve a little in mpg after first oil change. I was planning on going with a full synthetic 5w30. I was thinking of doing first oil change at 1,500 miles just to purge the break-in oil. What do you guys think? Good idea/bad idea? TBH, I have never changed oil early in a car before, but have done so with my bikes after the break-in.

I have, however, noticed when in that mpg mode on dash that my right foot can greatly affect fuel consumption.

One other thing, I have been using 87 octane since it says the truck can consume that. (Don't roast me too badly guys... ) I may have done 89 on my second fill-up and did not notice any difference.

Stop lights and stop & go traffic are when you're going to get the worst mileage especially if you punch it out of the stops. The trick to getting better MPG in town is use the brakes as little as possible and accelerate moderately. It doesn't improve travel time to accelerating hard from stops only to slam on the brakes at the next light. I average 22 MPG in city driving in my Bronco 2.3L, not driving slow but not needlessly punching it and reducing braking by slowing down early when I know I'm going to miss a light. I get it, the Raptor is powerful and you want to use it, but you're mileage is going to be horrible if you do.

I'm just over 4000 miles now and my average in Grand Tetons and Yellowstone NPs was just over 20mpg running 35psi cold/37-38 warm. It'll get better.

Note: Speedo is reading 1-2mph high now based on every radar sign I've passed, e.g. truck says 35 and sign says 33.

Yes, if you always have you're foot in the turbos you might as well have a NA V8.

I’m pretty conscious of the throttle in and out of the stops.

That’s great to hear. I just lowered the psi to 39. We will see if that helps out. I’m seriously considering changing the oil to a better synthetic in about 1k miles or so.

I don't think it could hurt to change the oil early on. I did my first change at 1,500 miles and the oil was surprisingly black.

Mine too so I guess I will never get a speeding ticket.

I am pretty sure most brands do that with slightly underrated speeds.
I have seen that on about every Ford I have ever checked it on, in the past couple decades.
Not sure why they do it, just know you can get a GPS app on your phone and check it that way as well and pretty much always with stock size tires etc, the actual speeds will be a couple MPH below the GPS speeds. Pretty much same as the radar display signs will show a couple MPH under what your vehicle shows.

About the only speedometers I know are supposed to be dead on accurate are the law enforcement vehicles which are optioned with certified speedometers that are proven to be dead on accurate through some sort of certification process.
