Part of what you're hearing is likely the secondary air injection pump not the engine.

Thank you all. I wanted to record the cold start rattle as the oil pressure builds up and see how it sounded. I am considering buying the baxterperformanceusa.com FORD 2.7 & 3.0L ECOBOOST FS-101-BK CARTRIDGE TO SPIN-ON ADAPTER

This adapter is supposed to help eliminate the rattle associated with low/no oil pressure when the engine initially starts up. Do other people here consider the same issue as a long term reliability concern?

It's not an issue though? paying $400 to 'fix' something that is working by design seems nonsensical to me

I believe this engineers data he captured. To each his own. But it sounds rough when my motor starts.
Maybe it's true. I guess your engine is likely designed for an operating life of maybe 250,000 miles. Start up wear is the greatest contributor to wear under normal circumstances. So, let's say this device works and reduces wear by 50% or some high metric. You now have a 400,000 mile engine.

For me it's not a factor since I probably won't own the truck past 100,000 miles, so it really depends on your individual needs? Paying $400 now to save $5-8k later is a good investment if the premise holds.

100% agreed.

Also how will Ford react to this if there is a warranty issue? I'd think about installing this once the powertrain warranty expires.

I would remove any engine mods before making an engine warranty claim but that's just me.

It will be interesting to see how Ford responds to an engine failure warranty claim when you present receipts for spin on oil filters for an engine that utilizes cartridge filters.

I had a similar but much louder clatter recently. I have friends who have had the Cam phaser issue on their 3.5L TT Expedition and F-150 and it sounded similar. For them, it was a major repair. I had not heard that on the 3.0L. However my wife’s Explorer ST 3.0 TT, with 60k miles, doesn’t sound great.

The sound I heard on my RR lasted about a second and then went away. I brought it to the dealer and they diagnosed that one of my cam solenoids was bad. It’s in the shop this week and they’re narrowing down to which one is bad, by replacing all and then pulling them back to identify the faulty one. I have 25k miles. It’s all being fixed under warranty.

A followup to this thread. Everything was taken care of under warranty. The dealer bought new solenoids for each cam bank and eliminated it down to the fault bank one by one. The is now solved. Even though the sound only occurred for less than a second after start, fixing the problem resulted in the truck feeling more responsive after the repair. I will be buying an extended warranty before the factory warranty is up.

Phew, I was scared that I was going to hear cam phaser rattle like I had on my second gen f150 raptor. It came back after 3 separate cam phaser "repairs." It was the ultimate reason I sold the thing for the RR.
