I was looking at my friend's Maverick and wishing that the Ranger came with a storage cubby in the side of the box like the Maverick does. Tacoma, Ridgeline also come with one, and the Colorado/Canyon has a cubby in the tailgate. Aside from the small area under the back seat, the Ranger really lacks storage space.

I looked at my Ranger bed and noticed a large square space on the passenger side that almost looks like it has some spots that were intended for mounting screws.

Here is a video of someone cutting and installing a second cubby in a Tacoma. It looks like the inside of the bed is aluminum in the Tacoma.

I am seriously considering this. Just nervous about cutting a hole in the side of the bed! Has anyone done it?

Curious to see how this turns out. In the video it looked like that bed was some sort of plastic composite. The ranger bed being metal will be much more difficult to cut, but definitely doable.

There is not a lot of room behind that panel. Go underneath and reach up.

I think the space below the rear seat is larger than you think

And I’d add some mollie panels in the bed if you want more storage in the bed.

The toyota does have a composite bed. They did that a number of years back.

I am following this thread because if that works out, its possibly something i would do in the future, too

I am interested in this also. I have a swing out storage box on the passenger side of my bed. I bought it from Ford, using points. I like it, and only keep gloves, tie down straps, bungees, rags, and a tow draw bar in it. In my case, I keep a rear seat dog hammock/protector over the rear seat, and it makes accessing the under seat storage very difficult.

@Tunisian That looks like a great set up. How did you get it lined up without opening up the side of the bed? Can you show pictures from underneath the truck looking up at the compressor?

Everything is concealed and protected from water and mud splash

I don't want it for a compressor. I just want some storage for straps and stuff.
It's not always easy to empty out the back seat to access the under seat storage.

F-150's also come with a cubby box that looks slimmer than the Maverick one, however, I'm starting to second guess cutting a hole in the side.

You can mount one of those butterfly boxes

i would like somewhere else to put straps and stuff too. thats why i was hoping this was going to work out. adding a bolt on swing out box cuts down on bed room and that sometimes doesn't work out well. kind of like how some tonneau covers can't get out of the way enough and you have to pull them get the full bed space

Personally, I'm using molle panels with molle bags.

Easy enough to install. Customizable. Removable with no permanent modification. Panels themselves don't take up bed space.

Was interested to see if this would work out, but this is the sort of mod I let someone else do the leg work on and weigh up if it's something I want to get into. It's not easy to reverse or back out of.

I've done similar in my old trucks but used metal and a lock. Made those myself though, wished I had pictures but nowadays should be able to find almost anything you want prefabbed you'd think, even if for another model of truck just check under where your going to cut for wiring and bracing. Follow the old adage measure and look 3 times, cut once!

Might be jumping in here late but here’s a random unused spot inside the truck I’ve utilized. If you run Milwaukee tools (or similar) some of the individual M-12 series come with small rectangular 2 - 2 1/2” deep little suitcase looking cases. All my tools go into my tool chests so these are never utilized. These fit PERFECTLY on each side of the back seat upright. They stay put 100% once in place, easy to remove & put back, stay tucked away behind the seat belts & don’t affect the seats at all. Perfect for small items - bungees, gloves, small tools, fire starters, etc, you name it.
I have one each on both sides of my back seat in my Raptor. Never given me a problem or made any sort of noise or movement. Just passing it along if anyone is still paying attention to this thread.
