Anyone know the limit of adding e85. I've been adding 8 gallons with no issues. Pump duty cycle is not maxed out.

thanks

Ranger is not designed for E85 use. You will eventually experience problems with rubber and plastic parts that come into contact with fuel. The engine itself is not designed for E85 use, the onboard engine control computer is not programmed for E85 use. You are also actively voiding your Ford manufacturer's warranty.

E85 fuel should only be used in vehicles that carry the "FlexFuel" badging.

I've ran E85 on my raptors for years.

The stock fuel system can run up to 50% with a tune.

No, a stock Ford Ranger EcoBoost cannot run on E85. The standard fuel system lacks the necessary flow capacity (for both the fuel pump and the injectors) and the required hardware/software to adjust to high-ethanol mixtures. [1, 2]

Why stock EcoBoosts can't use E85
  • Fuel Demands: E85 contains less energy per gallon than standard gasoline, meaning the engine requires up to 30% more fuel to maintain the correct air-to-fuel ratio. Standard factory EcoBoost fuel systems max out and cannot supply this volume.
  • Factory Limitations: According to Ford guidelines, EcoBoost engines are generally only rated to run on gasoline with up to 15% ethanol (E15).
  • Component Damage: Running E85 on a vehicle not designed for it can severely damage the engine, fuel lines, and injectors due to the corrosive nature of high-concentration ethanol. [1, 2, 3]
What about modified setups?
While you cannot run it completely stock, the high octane rating (100+) of E85 makes it highly popular for boosting turbocharged performance. If you want to safely run ethanol on a Ford Ranger, you will typically need: [1, 2]
  • Upgraded high-pressure fuel pumps (HPFP) and injectors.
  • An aftermarket tune (or a flex-fuel sensor/kit) to properly recalibrate the engine control module. [1, 2, 3]
Many enthusiasts in forums like the Ranger5G community strongly advise against using E85 unless the truck has been specifically modified and tuned for it. [1, 2]

Someone else can do the math, but 8 gallons is about 40% of the capacity. If the rest of the fuel is 10% alcohol, you're running about 35% to 40% alcohol.

The truck wasn't designed for that, but I won't comment on the actual impact.

You're probably getting less power without a tune.
Does anyone know of a flex fuel tune kit like MHD available for the raptor?

I'm reading Goose's website about the tune calibration.
Looks like he uses the COBB flex fuel system with a custom tune.

ford v6 ecoboosts have a lot of headroom on their fuel systems. I'm a former tuner that knows the ins/out of e85. E85 is all I have raced with over the years.
Looks like people still have no clue about e85.

thanks

I'll just put this here, even though you don't seem to be concerned about it.

Note: Use of any fuel for which the vehicle was not designed can impair the emission control system, cause loss of vehicle performance, and cause damage to the engine which may not be covered by the vehicle Warranty.
Do not use:
  • Diesel fuel.
  • Fuels containing kerosene or paraffin.
  • Fuel containing more than 15% ethanol (E15) or E85 fuel.
  • Fuels containing methanol.
  • Fuels containing metallic-based additives, including manganese-based compounds.
  • Fuels containing the octane booster additive, methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT).
  • Leaded fuel, using leaded fuel is prohibited by law.
The use of fuels with metallic compounds such as methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl, which is a manganese-based fuel additive, will impair engine performance and affect the emission control system.
