Well the official announcement for the new Ford mid-sized EV truck has released, and Ford apparently changed their corporate mind and decided to call it the Fathom, not the Ranchero anymore. Ford said that in developing the truck it “reached a new depth of innovation, allowing the company to fathom possibilities once thought beyond reach.” Okay, interesting basis for a name I suppose... Suppose it's better than a Not-A-Ranchero, to go along with the Not-A-Mustang and the Not-A-Bronco.... But they will be available for pre-order soon! Still no picture, but its said to have move cabin space than a Rav4 (which I thought was underwhelming any ways, but...) So here we are Ford Fathom Message and Ford.com Reveal

I don't think the Fathom is right for me, but I don't see why this wouldn't crush Slate and do some good numbers.

Still waiting to see how it looks sans camo...that'll be the real test in my opinion.

So after the Lightning fiasco of Ford losing $44K per unit sold, 5,671 currently unsold Mustang EVs, and dropping EV demand, now we have this whatever it is. The camouflaged road test model looks like a Maverick/Escape unibody. The price targets a certain urban dweller demographic who is probably won't tow with it (at least not very far between charges) but also has many entry level vehicles to pick from. Ford covers the low price by jacked up prices on gas burners to ridiculous levels and high end models necessary to recoup Jim Farley's $1.6 Billion in EV, Hybrid, and PHEV tech. Lightning's replacement has been announced as a Chevy Volt type truck, a 1920s technology diesel-electric style system where gas burns to charge the battery. Don't think this all electric Fathom is going to sell in rural America but perhaps enough city folks will buy them. Average EV ownership is 36 months; most drivers lease them.

hmmm, i dont really care. the F150 Lightning didnt sell because it cant do truck things, maybe a small ute will be a better seller, but I dont really care

I think people who are on the fence about owning an EV might feel better at this price point.

I also appreciate the engineering that has gone into it. It may not be the best EV due to cost constraints but hopefully it is well designed and engineered.
