Is this normal? Truck is 1.5 years old with 18,000 miles. Northeast and spends good amount of time near salt water. Any suggestions on how to remove / repaint and maintain the frame? The spots are mostly on the welds.

Yes, needs to be cleaned and something sprayed or brushed on.
From 5G Forum POR 15 was recommended. I thought with a brand new truck I would go over the seams, Rad support lower. i se. e I could get POR 15 in small tins a 6 pack.
Figure i would just brush it on. That looks ok the open weld, from what i can see no crack, just clean ie a wire wheel on a drill. Please wear eye protection. Some clothes you can throw out. Climbing under truck. Or just wire brush. Wack the paint off with a flat punch. The POR 15 is a designed paint for its adhering properties on to a cleaned surface, break the flakes off.

I order some frame sliders for i think that area. Like X Mas time to be built. Comes powered coated.
i felt good I got $100 USD off. said i had tried to put some coupon codes in. Then he gave me the discount. Mines the type screws into the welded nuts on inside panel of the floor stamp.. Then to make it stronger you drill into bead weld and bolt on from the side. On the frame sliders I ordered a step in the pipping. I order the side step on back. One behind last door to step up to secure down luggage on a frame roof rack. Pricy. Seems anything that is good you will have to pay at least $1k

There's many other products to use. POR15 would not be allowed to use in Cali. old school. Wear gloves face mask.

You could clean and paint with a self etching primer. Be careful with any kind of undercoating around salt water that could trap moisture in. When I go down to the beach in Mexico I like to spray the underside of my vehicle with Fluid Film first.

Not "any type of undercoating" will trap moisture.

My suggestion to avoid rust is to use a lanolin-based spray like woolwax, fluid film, surface shield, etc. They're simple to apply, albiet messy, and need to be touched up or reapplied annually, but they'll arrest existing rust, displace moisture, and work into crevices and such. And they're cheap too, especially if you have an air compressor and apply it yourself.

Isn't that what I said? 🤔 An easy way to apply Fluid Film is with a pump up weed sprayer. I do my Jeep once a year before driving on the beach.

i like that way of applying it. i live right on the gulf of mexico, like its a half mile from my driveway to the intercoastal water way, so the pump up sprayer sounds like a great way to spray the underside instead of getting that black undercoating sprayed all over

Has anyone heard of or used a product called rustoleum? It’s like an enamel black spray paint

A sprayer seems really smart.

I bought a cheap spray gun, but the nice thing about it is that it has a two hose attachments that one of which sprays 360 degrees so you can insert it inside of the frame and spray in a sort of spherical/cylindrical pattern

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DGPKYPD6?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_2&th=1

I also ended up with a box of spray cans which is handy for touching up say when rotating tires or changing the oil as well as a container for filling the spray gun

I too live near the beach and frequently am parked near the ocean. And there is the occasional Baja trip where I invariably end up right on the beach.

This is the first time I've used a lanolin based product and based on the drive shaft, which is coated, I think it will work nicely.

which is a good thing because I have a life time or two of lanolin at this point ;)
