Major transmission problems at 5,000 miles

2024 XLT FX4 with 10R60 transmission began with harsh downshifting (3,2,1) when coming to a stop, then began to exhibit other issues:

1. MPG dropped from an average of 17.5 to 15.3 (combined highway and city)
2. Frequent slipping during acceleration at any speed
3. Harsh engagement at random times -- especially after taking my foot of the accelerator
4. After rapid deceleration, pressing the gas pedal did nothing at all -- no increase in RPM, and no acceleration until I pumped the gas pedal 3 or more times -- a total loss of power.

Dealer updated PCM software and "retrained" transmission, and the harsh downshifting, slipping, and harsh engagement were greatly reduced (they still happen, but much less frequently and without as much force). I'm also now back up to 18 mpg. Unfortunately, though, that same loss-of-power event happened again today, and I am scheduling another dealer visit.

Here's my challenge: I can't replicate this issue reliably myself, so I doubt the dealer technician will be able to. Is there some sort of ODBII monitor that I could use to record the truck's performance, that would document the loss-of-power event when it occurs?

I have a 24xlt fx4, the first few 1000 miles the tranny was doing some weird things. Just drive it like you normally would and it should get better. I'm at 11k now, and it runs great. Hang in there bud!

Thanks DutchRanger. In my original post I asked about ways to document these problems for the dealership, since they can't easily be replicated. I'm hoping folks will have some ideas for that.

Why? Because the loss-of-power issue almost resulted in an accident the other day. I didn't give all the details but basically I couldn't accelerate around someone who was backing out of a parking lot -- and if I had just stopped they would have T-boned me. I avoided collision by swinging wide and they hit their brakes just in time to stop. If I could have accelerated I could have easily moved past them (even if they hadn't braked in time).

So..."hanging in there" is not an option - especially if family members are in the vehicle.

I have the Innova 3160rs obd2 scanner and it streams live data on most vehicles while driving. I have used it on 2 other cars I've owned but haven't tried it on my Ranger yet. Look into an obd2 scanner because they are handy to have anytime something goes wrong. I'm not talking about a programmer to be clear. There is a youtube channel wrenching with Kenny and he has some really good info on scanners for diy guys. Hope this helps.

Oh man... that blows. My issue was never that bad. I just had some abrupt shifting problems. Hope you figure it out!

Maybe you can get a camera and mount it in the center, above you, or some way that shows the gauges and view the windshield trying to show what you see? A dash cam, but for really watching the dash

I've been using an OBDLink MX+ and it's been working great with Mercedes, BMW, Ford, Toyota, and Subaru vehicles we've had, and it works with Forscan too which makes it even more worth the purchase price.

It felt like my transmission was slipping when it was new. I think it's over that now, though.

It's not a very good learning system.

I had the exact same thing happen to me and it was in a bad situation also. I wrote it off as a one-off but seems like it's both of us. my scenario: I was accelerating hard to a yellow/red light and a person walked in the intersection (NYC lol) so I slammed on the break, but I was in the intersection with a bus coming and I slammed on the gas and the fkin thing did nothing...no power, no gas...nothing. I have an early built 2024 what build date is yours?

ScottyRangerDanger - Wow that's an even worse situation for sure, but the same sequence of hitting the brake and then the accelerator. My build was in May, 2024, so also early in the year.

Yeah I've had that. Probably once a month or 2 the gas pedal just doesn't work for a second or 2 then restarts like nothing happened

Have them check the trans fluid level; some have been known to leave the factory a quart or two low.
