Yeah I have the 2 compartment one and I never access the stuff below as its a pain, so I've been thinking to take the top layer off and just use the deep one.
I just have a tape measure, charging cable & a few other things in the bottom that I leave in my truck. I keep my wallet & glasses in the top. My wife took over the sunglass holder.

I tossed the top tray but kept the bottom one. In the space below I keep an IFAK and TQ. I don't keep so much stuff in here that I felt it necessary to have 2 trays plus that bottom compartment. This is pretty much the extent of what I keep in there besides the occasional business card or something.

Good call on the IFAK and TQ... I'll be moving a set to my truck today. Didn't think about that until I saw your post. Always had that in my work bag, but since I no longer work, I don't have that bag with me to often.

My range bag has 2 TQs and the same IFAK. Then the additional TQ and IFAK in the center console. At work I carry a TQ on my duty belt and a Dark Angel Medical Blue Line Trauma Kit into my cargo pocket. I always make sure to have some sort of access to medical equipment while I'm out and about. In the military I was a medic and now I'm a first aid/CPR/stop the bleed instructor for my department so I think its a bit hypocritical to not be prepared!

I have the double tray. First thing I bought when I got the truck. For our extended road trip this summer I ditched the bottom tray because the 2 bottom layers were too thin to hold what I needed in there. Bulkier things can fit in the top tray if you don't have the console lid compartment. For example sunglasses need the upper lid recess to fit or the lid won't close. This works great for my needs.

I don't have the bottom tray in either. Larger things in the bottom and pens and glasses in top
