I was in the automotive autobody repair business for 40 years. Today's modern materials match beautifully, but the reality is, you have no control over the application. The painter does. A bad paint job can look just as good as a great paint job, but will it 6 months or a year from now, is the question. Let the dealer brush touch the nicks and decide from there. Look at it this way.........as is, that's the worst it will ever look. A repaint you don't know.

As usual your blanket, absolute statements, while reassuring to the OP are just bullshit.

You have no idea where it will be painted, who will paint it, with what they'll paint it, how they'll paint it etc. etc. but you KNOW it'll be fine because your paint job is fine. Truth is it may be, or it may spiral into a nightmare that may never be fully resolved.

Example...

Red 2017 Mazda 6... rear ended (low speed), bumper, trunk lid, rear fender(s) damage. Back to the body shop 3 times. Each time they admitted shoddy workmanship. Excuses.... Oh, that's "dyeback" from drying the clearcoat too quickly. Oh, the finishing guy was supposed to use 3 different grits of polish, looks like he only used coarse. Oh, my lead guy is on vacation this week....

That was at a major chain business here in the SF Bay area. The car was never back as it was, I ended up just moving on.

Per SubaruRaptor that never happened. It was fine because his was fine.

OP.... Live with it if you can. Reality is no one sees it but you. A badly painted hood will be seen by everyone.
As others have stated in this thread. If the dealer / ford says they will take care of it then it will be. Its a paint chip not rocket science. Your story or whatever is not even close to the same scenario as anyone is talking about here, so cool story I guess, sorry you had shitty work done but thats not what this threads about.

As always, all knowing, all seeing. You are right... the dealer will take care of it, to their satisfaction. How many times do you think they will pay to have the panel repainted to the OP's satisfaction?

My scenario is exactly what is being talked about here... painting to make the vehicle look like new. As mentioned above... it's the painter. But I forgot... you of course know who will be painting it.

Every post from you is the same, everyone's wrong, you are right, your opinion is fact. The forum's town fool.

Bye now.

I hit my wife's ranger raptor fender with a car wash wand and put a chip/scratch in it. I Googled "professional paint chip repairers" and the first company that came up was a ceramic coating company that is going to put iconrocklear paint protection on both of our Ranger Raptors this spring, now.

The guy had this little insrument that resembled a small weed pipe with a small hole/spout at the bottom of the bowl part. After cleaning the crater super super good, he fills this thing up with my touch up paint tube that I bought from the dealer (the amount of paint that comes out of this thing, cannot be replicated with any small brush or anything for that matter), and he goes into the scratch and dabs tiny amounts of paint into the cavity/gouge, being careful to keep the fresh paint in a concave shape and let it dry. He did this in several coats, until he thought the next coat would make the fresh paint convex in relation to the factory paint. I think he said it took 3 coats of paint on mine. Then he uses the clearcot part of touchup paint tube to make the surface convex slightly above the surface of the factory paint/clearcoat. Then he sands with super fine grit sandpaper ever so slighty. Then hand polishes it.

You can see his work in the picture, but standing next to it, you can only see it if you know its there.

I pulled my wife's wipers up the other day to keep them from sticking to the window with the freezing sleet we had coming our way, and the edge of the wiper took some paint off the edge of her hood. Be careful if you do this with your ranger, I'm not anymore. Gotta go back and have that touched up as well. My guy said the edges are the hardest to do, but if it's not in a spot where you notice it, it doesn't really matter, to some people.

Anyways, I just thought I would share this in case there's anybody out there, that's anal about they're paint chip turning into rust eventually like me.

Just to let everyone know, the suface is perfectly smooth. You just can't tell because it's clear coat.

Sounds like they are going to do a respray. They don’t even have everything they need to proceed at this point. No idea how long this is going to take. I indicated my preference for them to just touch it up but I don’t know that I have any influence at this point since it’s between Ford and the dealer.

Is a collision center respray as durable as a factory paint job? Let’s just assume the color is matched correctly and take that aspect out of it.

A few have mentioned it. Any shop Ford or private is only as good as the painter. Word of mouth of trusted friends means more to me than any advertisement. I got lucky and found a shop that to me is good as factory. (And I’m picky)
Considering you have not bought yet, I would drive further out and find another. That or have your dealer do a trade where they do covered flatbed. No road trips
Good luck 👍

Appreciate it. I'm going to talk to them tomorrow and see what's up. Leaning toward your approach and just walking away if they need to do a respray.

I had to get my hood and fender lines adjusted at my local dealership. Make sure its a dealership with a body shop. I had to leave it overnight but I am 97% happy with the work, where its not noticeable to me unless you're pulling calipers out.

As for the pain chip, it sucks but my advice is to just try to move on. You can spend time and energy fixing it or fighting to get it fixed, and the second you drive away you'll get another bigger rock chip that supplants it, or a nice ole door ding at your next grocery store visit.

Collision center should be fine look at the Google reviews. Also it took 5 days to order the paint stickers for my fender fyi.

I would never accept a respray for a brand new vehicle. The product I made for one of the companies I worked for had to be put on before the vehicle goes into the paint ovens. Therefore, I have access to knowledge that will say there is no bump shot that is going to come even close to what the factory can do for paint, it's not even close. The white body gets dipped in it chemical solution that cleans it. Then it gets electroplated in a solution that prevents rust. Then it gets dried off. Then it goes into a paint oven at about 450° for about 30 minutes. No bump shop Is going to do anything close to that.

Hope this helps your decision.

Its paint on a car man. There are literally 1000s of vehicles who get reshot all the time. This forum acts like this truck is a million dollar ferrari. Folks a respray isnt going to kill you.

LOL. Love getting both sides of the argument here and really appreciate everyone’s input. It’s boiling down to “what will my OCD tolerate”.

I’m going talk to them tomorrow and see if I can use the last day of the year to accept the truck as-is in exchange for additional discount.

So if you want the chip fixed, the only one that wil do just that, is a paint coatings place. A body shop will only paint the whole panel. If you want the panel re-sprayed, it will be seen on the road, from far away.
