After 8,000 miles on my 2025 RR i realized the airbox has not been properly installed the entire time from the factory. Shame on me for not checking immediately as i did check most other things, but this has my really ticked at the thought of how much dirty air my engine may have consumed as a result.

This is an issue straight from the factory. Also, if you have the dealership or someone else change your filter you may want to check behind them each time. This particular style is far more of a PITA that it should be (at least on mine).

Seen that before on many vehicle especially after they had it serviced. If you want to see if any fine dust sneaked by for peace of mind. Get a white wash cloth handy, remove the rubber expanding hose coupler, the wrinkled one between the air box and intake. Wipe the V shaped pockets out good as it will usually trap them before the smooth hose ever visibly gets dirty. Sometimes the rubber itself will leave black marks but anything else might be bad mojo! :like:

I swapped my filter out a few months ago and noticed the cover was difficult to get latched in and took me 20 minutes!

My cover however was tight before I took it apart.

Even though the cover was not all the way down it appears that any air entering there would still be entering on the dirty side of the filter? If you are concerned about dirt ingestion send an oil sample to Blackstone and put that in the notes. Dirt/dust ingestion will usually result in high silicon numbers.

That is incorrect. The dirty side is underneath. Normally….

Put a K&N on wife's Explorer was changing oil and dealer said the filter needs changed. Only 3 months old. I guess they needed some more money

The bottom is the dirty side. The top is they intake direct to the engine and the cover seals off the topside.

I’m going to ask my service writer about the issue and documenting it. Doubt there is much they can do but I have a great service department near me and they always was us take care of me.

I’m one of the lazy guys that take it in to the dealership for an oil change. $65 out the door using motorcraft products is worth the $20ish premium for my time these days.

Plus there is the documented service records.

The incorrect fit isn’t so loose that it’s instantly noticeable which is why I’m concerned many may have this issue.

The correct fit is a PITA to get latched. I doubt any tech will do it properly

Correct. The way it's designed means the filter sits on the housing on its rubber seal and any suction pulls it down slightly. I think OP is fine but good catch.

I just fixed mine and it actually wasn’t as difficult as I was expecting. I just did it with all the tubing still attached and sort of bent the front end up carefully while pushing the rear end down and back into the holes. It took a couple tries but can definitely hear it click into the slots and no more visible filter 👍🏼

I think I had it backwards as others have said. The intake is on the bottom. Brain Fart.

I also replaced my Ford filter with a K&N so I can have better airflow and not need to buy single-use filters. The difficulty of accessing the filter box did not surprise me, as I had a 2019 Ram 2500 diesel that used a similar system - bigger and even more difficult to take apart... 😕
