To all that are watching—Yesterday was supposed to be Dyno/Tune day. The day came and went, and I didn’t know what to say. I have good news to report, and bad news. I don’t have any big-time, high horsepower numbers to report, or pictures of a lean-burned melted engine—that‘s the good news.

Bad news is that I’m out of fuel. Me and my Tuner (Cody at Stanghi.com), had a conversation that kind of went something like “Why didn’t you get the Big Pump and Fuel Injectors)? Like Duh…And, to continue the bad news, I spend over 2 hours on the phone with Nick at Nostrum (Fuel Injector and pump Manufacturer)—swapping stories and calculating which fuel pump and stage of injectors I needed—thanks Nick!

I always stated I wanted at least 500whp—that number is sort of what I said here, but not really what I’ve been telling my Tuner, parts suppliers, and all the others I asked for advice (Nathan, Winfield, and Kyle). I didn’t want to make some outlandish claim on here and not have the goods to back it up. I really wanted a lot more power. Well, bottom line is that I’m not going to get there without some sort methanol blend or other octane enhancement (yes, Ivan you’re right). The stock fuel system injectors and pump are taxed too heavily with methanol blends to where there is no top-side safety room.

When I first started building my truck, I thought I would go the Ford Pro Cal tune and call it a day. The RR’s computer had yet to be cracked—once it was cracked and easily tunable everything changed. First, I wanted a little, then, more and more. I watched a video (Nathan’s RR) on a dyno at full power and the sound it made at full-tilt was almost primal. I had to have that. Other videos of it on the road changed my pocket book forever. I sought advice and copied much of his build—except the injectors and pump. Thought I could squeeze by. Nope.

Now. More bad news—while talking with Nick at Nostrum, he said many people that bought the regular Big Bore hi pressure fuel pump have already traded it in for the larger Goliath “X” kit series pump. And, it kind of presents as the “Buy once, Cry once ethical dilemma . So, great, I need that big pump today. Here is my card! My truck is on the Dyno!

More bad news (besides trying figure out the big-assed LIE I am going to have to tell my wife where that “extra” $5k from our bank account went), one component of the kit is out of stock—and it will take 3-4 weeks before I can get it. So, I’m “Pre-Ordered”. And, since the whole top of the engine (Charge/Crossover pipes, Intake Manifold, etc_) have to come off, I might as well put some NGK Ruthenium Spark Plugs in “while I’m in there”. (Ruthenium—don’t ask. I’ve never heard of it before either. It seems that the spark plug companies are using all the precious metals on the Periodic Table of Elements now; Platinum, Iridium, and now Ruthenium to make new plugs)—I had to go look it up.

My temporary new plan (can’t leave the truck on the Dyno at the Tuner’s for 3 weeks) is to put a 93 Octane tune on it that limits it, to stay safe with fuel delivery. That should take place on Monday/Tuesday. I will report back after then.

I would tune it to 93 octane and see what it does there, while the rest of the parts arrive to boost it up some more.

That is the plan. Crossed fingers.

We just did 495whp on Garrett Powermax Turbos with 93 octane. I believe you should do it, and then after getting the fuel upgrade do more ! :) good luck with your project

car did 353whp and 577nm in stock form (with fbo without garretts)
did you change anything in the fueling system for the 93 octane run?, fuel pump, injectors, etc? or was it just the upgraded turbos and sw tuning?

Nothing fuel related. Just the normal stuff: downpipes, intake, charge pipes and intercooler

Any plan for flex fuel tuning? Once you upgrade the fuel pump and injectors, i imagine you could get some good gains adding in e85 as you should be able to flow a good bit more fuel.

Ford Ranger Ranger Raptor on Dyno + Turbo Upgrade JefferyC-25RangerRaptor-SHP93cal-Dyno

Fresh 93 fuel. The blue lines are last runs today (474Whp). Red lines are the baseline from when the truck was stock (347Whp). A 127 hp improvement. There was more power to be had, butt, the injector pulse widths were too wide and the fuel pressure dropped from 3600psi to under 3000 psi. It needs more fuel. I tried to overnight a set of injectors and pump from Nostrum a few days ago—but one component of the kit will take up to 3 weeks for them to get from their supplier—I’ll have to wait. The Tuner, Cody from Stanghi.com, thinks there is a lot more to be had with more fuel. video

The video is of the 474whp run. Sounds nice on “normal” exhaust mode. The SPD Cat/downpipes can be heard-kind of a growl- if you compare the video sound from the video at the beginning of this post when it was stock and this one at 474whp. The truck is far more aggressive—in stock video, I could barely tell the Truck’s wheels were moving—in this video, you can see the truck squat and rise under torque. I pick up the truck tomorrow and I will see if I can get a draggy run to compare to the I made when the truck was stock. Thanks to my industry experts: Texas Motorworx, Nathan, Winfield, Kyle, and Nick—for answering all my dumb-assed questions and pointing me in the right direction.

your power doesn’t fall off until over 6600rpm—did you see my last Dyno pull? Mine died at 6100 (I mean, complete fall off like it hit a rev limiter)when stock, and stops at about 6200 with both hp and Tq declining. I’m not sure if my tuner quit pushing it because it was running out of fuel. I think you started at 10hp more than me at stock and ended with about 20hp more. Our torque curves are different as well. Mine stays above 400lbft of torque from 3500-6000rpm and over 450lbft from about 3700-5250rpm. Yours has a peak to it. Is that something you tried to do?

I actually just looked at your units of measurement—you are using PS and Nm for Hp and Tq? I remember using those units when I was overseas. Now, I think about your name and realize you must be from down under. Sorry I missed that.

If my conversion math is correct, 497PS equals about 490hp and the 753nm peak is about 563 lbft of torque.

We use indeed PS for our measurements but this one is in whp as it in on a dynojet dyno. So 495whp should be same as US dynos.
Regarding the power, we tried to extract the maximum we can on the stock fueling. The spool was very good, but this is also helped a lot by the other mods car have (intercooler, downpipes, cold air intake and charge pipes). We raised the rpm, the fuel was good for that but also I think that our 93 was maybe better (your 93 translates to our 98 but this used 100 so maybe that’s the thing).

Didn’t mean to mis quote hp versus PS, for some reason my iPhone does weird things with this app, right in the middle of doing something some screen popped up and your Dyno chart enlarged, and I saw PS as unit of measure—then, I recalled a member from Mexico post your numbers in PS. I’m also squinting reading my phone. I thought your handle was ROOmaps—which I thought was Roo—from kangaroo down under. I looked to see where you were from to see where you were getting 100 octane fuel. It’s getting late and my eyes are getting tired. I spent a decade in Europe—Germany specifically, not that far away on a world view. I can get Sunoco race fuel in octanes from 100 to 118, I just couldn’t afford to drive very far at $12-24 dollars a gallon. It is far more cost effective for me to use $2.80 a gallon e85. Might need to get one of those Longranger 35 gallon fuel tanks.
