To all that are watching—Yesterday was supposed to be Dyno/Tune day. The day came and went, and I didn’t know what to say. I have good news to report, and bad news. I don’t have any big-time, high horsepower numbers to report, or pictures of a lean-burned melted engine—that‘s the good news.
Bad news is that I’m out of fuel. Me and my Tuner (Cody at Stanghi.com), had a conversation that kind of went something like “Why didn’t you get the Big Pump and Fuel Injectors)? Like Duh…And, to continue the bad news, I spend over 2 hours on the phone with Nick at Nostrum (Fuel Injector and pump Manufacturer)—swapping stories and calculating which fuel pump and stage of injectors I needed—thanks Nick!
I always stated I wanted at least 500whp—that number is sort of what I said here, but not really what I’ve been telling my Tuner, parts suppliers, and all the others I asked for advice (Nathan, Winfield, and Kyle). I didn’t want to make some outlandish claim on here and not have the goods to back it up. I really wanted a lot more power. Well, bottom line is that I’m not going to get there without some sort methanol blend or other octane enhancement (yes, Ivan you’re right). The stock fuel system injectors and pump are taxed too heavily with methanol blends to where there is no top-side safety room.
When I first started building my truck, I thought I would go the Ford Pro Cal tune and call it a day. The RR’s computer had yet to be cracked—once it was cracked and easily tunable everything changed. First, I wanted a little, then, more and more. I watched a video (Nathan’s RR) on a dyno at full power and the sound it made at full-tilt was almost primal. I had to have that. Other videos of it on the road changed my pocket book forever. I sought advice and copied much of his build—except the injectors and pump. Thought I could squeeze by. Nope.
Now. More bad news—while talking with Nick at Nostrum, he said many people that bought the regular Big Bore hi pressure fuel pump have already traded it in for the larger Goliath “X” kit series pump. And, it kind of presents as the “Buy once, Cry once ethical dilemma . So, great, I need that big pump today. Here is my card! My truck is on the Dyno!
More bad news (besides trying figure out the big-assed LIE I am going to have to tell my wife where that “extra” $5k from our bank account went), one component of the kit is out of stock—and it will take 3-4 weeks before I can get it. So, I’m “Pre-Ordered”. And, since the whole top of the engine (Charge/Crossover pipes, Intake Manifold, etc_) have to come off, I might as well put some NGK Ruthenium Spark Plugs in “while I’m in there”. (Ruthenium—don’t ask. I’ve never heard of it before either. It seems that the spark plug companies are using all the precious metals on the Periodic Table of Elements now; Platinum, Iridium, and now Ruthenium to make new plugs)—I had to go look it up.
My temporary new plan (can’t leave the truck on the Dyno at the Tuner’s for 3 weeks) is to put a 93 Octane tune on it that limits it, to stay safe with fuel delivery. That should take place on Monday/Tuesday. I will report back after then.
